2002 WHPSC Results
The 2002 World Human Powered Speed Challenge
will for the third year in a row pit man, technology, and sheer determination against the
unrelenting forces of air resistance and friction to determine the absolute boundaries of
man powered speed for a 200 meter distance. In 2001, Sam Whittingham broke the speed
record for the second year in a row by going 80.55 MPH. Matt Weaver broke the previous
years record by 6 MPH for second place.
Do you want to race at Battle Mountain? Now there are HPRA races and speed run qualifier races, which are open to
anybody with a bike.
| Once again racers will gather on SR305, outside of
Battle Mountain Nevada, to race on one of the straightest, flattest, and smoothest
surfaces in the world. The 4,619ft/1,408m altitude road allows riders an acceleration zone
of over 3 miles, enabling them to reach their maximum velocity. The WHPSC is not only an opportunity to set an IHPVA sanctioned world record for speed, it also represents
the World's Fastest Human propelled by his own power. |
 |
The marriage of maximum athletic power and high
level aerodynamic and engineering result in shockingly fast speeds.
A Battle Mountain racing committee has been
formed to oversee the the yearly event. This committee consists of Sean Costin, Gardner
Martin, Matt Weaver and Garrie Hill.
Though the WHPSC is is an invitational event for
logistics reasons, spectators and especially volunteers
are welcome to attend.
