€1,817 per liter regular is one of the reasons I ride a bike ('bent or upright) as often as I can. A single trip commuting saves me about €11 a day. Another reason is my personal health and fitness, that is getting better every day. Third, but not the most least reason is that I want to contribute to a healthy enviroment for my daughter to grow up in.
Ofcourse, our country (and the average distances bitween work and home) is much smaller. So one would have a bike ride as a logic alternative.

Here most people don't drive to the gym, they are just fat, lethargic and complain they have to walk too far from their big suv. Some will circle and wait for a close parking spot at the mall instead of walking a few feet. Its unusual to see more than one driver in traffic. On the other hand Ken at work has gone car free and will have ridden his bike to work every day for an entire year by the end of this week (10 mile commute), I have to admit that I drove a handful of times when the snow was too deep.

We had a "bike to work" day last thursday, here in the Netherlands. Weather was terrible, but I rode anyway. Didn't see more cyclists than usual. It is a great concept though. When going to work with the car, I see mainly 1 person in 1 vehicle. Most people (over here) commute an average distance of 12km. After work, they sometimes rush to the gym, park their cars as close as possible to the building and spend €50 a month for the gym.

Front tire blew out with a side wall gash coming back from lunch. First flat on that tire in 4 years. Used a dollar bill in the impromptu repair and made it back to work.

Looks like the weather will cooperate. I rode to work today. Traffic was unusually low. I did not see any other cyclists.
