I am going to meet Jerry on the Natchez Trace in October. I don't have the details, not sure if I am riding from home, 1000 miles to Natchez or driving there and just ridding the trace for a few days. That's the plan anyway. I don't think the 26x26 bike would be ready so it would be the carp. I have two routes to Natchez, the flat route an the scenic route with lots of hills.

Are you going to be ready for April? I just read an article by Greg Kolodziejzyk who hooked up his BoB trailer and took a tour with it hooked up to his NoCom. It was only 125 miles round trip with 50 pounds of stuff on the trailer http://www.adventuresofgreg.com/HPB/2009_07_24_archive.html . Hmmm, touring at 25 mph! Gives me an idea about doing the Natchez Trace.

They said they'd like a 60 day notice. I just have to give a date. They have to hire a replacement as I'm the only ME left in the division. I have to fix the heal to derailleur interference. A, I could move the cranks and seat forward or B I could make shorter cranks. I'll check the clearance using the old Suntour derailleur first. The Shimano shifts better though.

I have 9 speeds with the 58 tooth, 9 speeds with the 48 tooth, 5 speeds with the 36 tooth and 3 speeds with the 28 tooth, 28 total. I filed down the cage take up stop to get more. Probably have 160 degrees rotation, Chain is stretched on one extreme and nearly folded back on the other.

Tony, just retire and bring it down here. Temp was in the 80's for 2 days, 50's yesterday, and 64 today. It will be in the 70's most of next week.

It seems to work OK, all except my heel hits the derailleur. Snowing hard outside, so cant test ride it much. Chain was coming off the return idler on right turns, I tied a bungee cord on it, it seemed to help.

28/30*20=19

58 will be a little small with a full fairing.

I put a larger drive idler (6 inch cable pulley) on and moved it forward and inch, after welding I see I could have move it an additional half inch.. I am working on where to put the twisting return idler mount, using the old drive idler. The plastic on one side of the V-groove shows chain wear.

I was thinking about the same thing on the 4 chain rings. Pretty cool stuff.

Yesterday I changed the derailleur mount, I rotated the hanger about 90 degrees around the axle. Now the cage is inline with the cassette and idler when the chain is on the big sprockets 58 and 30, and still has excess take up on the 36 and 12 . I took 4 links out. I need a bigger return idler to get the chain above the fender. Snow storm weather is not conducive to test riding, not sure if heel will clear it.

The crank arms were too narrow, and my heals were interfering with the skirt on turns. I thought they were 127 mm, so I made a left crank arm 130 mm, but not bent inward. Its a little longer, as the old one measures 121 mm, Doh!

... I drilled and tapped a right side arm the same length. I am mounting 4 chain wheels, 28, 38, 48 and 58. Then I have to mess with the derailleur take up. I'll try mounting it 90 degrees ccw to get the cage to rotate more before the chain overlaps and without heal interference.


... Got the 4 chain rings mounted and on the bike. Weather is not conducent for test riding, still have rear derailleur wows.

I may have to go with a mid drive if I can't mount the derailleur so it can take up the slack with the gear ranges I want. Maybe I should just build the F-26

Wow, the chain ring sheet metal was waiting for me at my door, less than a day!

I goofed with the existing rings all morning, got a 58 and 36 mounted with narrow Q, the derailleur doesn't have enough take up. I have 58-36 to 32-11. 36 to 32 and 28 works, trying smaller cogs crashes the drive,as the cage folds over too much. 52, 48 and 32 front rings worked OK.

I don't know how the 68-42-28 will work.

I might try the shamano derailleur again, it might not hit my heal with the shorter cranks. It has an even longer cage,

I ordered aluminum sheet for the chain ring. Made full size print. I moved the BB down 3/4 inch and back 1/2 inch. Its 3 inches above seat. I moved the seat back to compensate for the shorter crank arms. Handle bar stem needs to be shortened. I'll look to see if I have a narrower BB spindle. Crank arm tool lost in fire, reordered.

I put on the shortened crank arms I made for the MBB-VPS, 5 inch long, 1 inch shorter, and most of my problems went away, heal doesn't hit derailleur, crank arm doesn't hit tire or fender, I can spin faster and my knees are lower.I like the Biopace ring. Im thinking of making a custom narrow BB and lowering it 1/2 inch. That will give me better vision over the nose. No progress on the 73 tooth chain wheel, I cant get even increments around the circumference. I am summing up 1 degree lengths, whet its over .5 inch long it interpolates the last position back to .5. I expect a small error from not being a straight line from point to point, but the errors are bigger, and I don't see my mistake. Though I could probably use a 65 tooth with the short cranks. I was able to import the spread sheet points into 2D LibreCad.

Got up to 30 mph in front of my house, seemed OK. After I finish the chain ring, I'll put the nose back on.


...Well, I guessed values until the distances between points was .5 inch. I did half, thinking I could rotate the other half, but I made a odd number of teeth... oops, Now I have to reguess all the teeth adding a tooth. I need a closed form.

I made a spread sheet to calculate a Biopace like chain ring contour. I have the shape at the pitch diameter, but need to integrate along the pitch circumference to get x,y points at every chain tooth. Then I can plot it full size after importing to cad.

I got the back wheel fender and skirts sealed up, now the front...I routed the rear brake cable inside the frame tube. I can put stuff there and no worry that its pushing on the cable.

... still needs some work, had to cut the front off, no pedal clearance. The loose tyvek gets glued to the fairing to seal.I use aluminum peal type pop rivets to joint the chloroplast as well as cable ties. Note the camping pad in the seat and studded tire behind.

The upgrades are turning into major rework. I should have the frame done by tomorrow.

... Well I lowered the seat 4 inches and the BB 2.5 inches, wheel base is 3 inches longer. Took it down the block and back. I don't know if it was such a good idea for a touring bike. Heal is hitting the derailleur again. I need to lengthen the chain, an put the back brake on. I can now put the back wheel on without having to let the air out. After I fix these things I'll start sealing up the front wheel.

The bike with fairing weighs 39 lbs, the front fairing weighs 5 lbs and the back half 3 lbs. Its 10 lbs lighter than the old Carp. I am doing some upgrades and then seal the front wheel and reinstall the fairing.

Having a January thaw today, 57 and rain. Thought Id take advantage of the nice weather and ride bike, since all the snow melted, cold returns tomorrow. Well, the deficiency of SWB with a tire between your legs became immediately obvious when it first touched wet driveway. Shorts are wet, shoes are wet, water draining off the cassette, cold air blowing in from the wheel opening. Only rode a block. The front wheel needs to be completely sealed off. This weather would be no problem in the Carp. Maybe Im barking up the wrong tree with this SWB FWD stuff and should just build a simple LWB bike again.
