I wonder if making the front wheels wider, but the front area of velo body would not be changed,will that affect the speed in general?

For simplifying the analysis you could assume 2d flow, since the ground is a Ditrichlet boundary and the sides of the velo shown in the photo are fairly straight. In the following photo , placing the wheels parallel with the streamline would have least drag: The distance between the streamlines in an indication of the flow velocity.

Right Tony! Put them too close to the fuselage and turbulence increases drag. Put them too far out and the drag on the front axle beam increases. Somewhere in the middle is the sweet spot. A wind tunnel or a lot of testing is needed to find the perfect width.

It's hard to say. You'll be adding some drag with the longer supports, but the wheels will be farther from the body, more in the free stream, and less in the curved, higher velocity flow around the nose.

Well,i know the F1 style will face the wind interference which could slow down the speed,however I don't want to make a comparation between F1 style and wheel-in or out style velos.What I want to do is using same velo,for example ,as 'La Mans' ,and only make it width wider.Actually, just increase the front support bar longer. sorry guys, i think this question is pretty physics like.

Thank you,Warren,but sorry, I didn't describe well, I mean the width of front wheel like the velo La Mans,the F1 style, the Velo front area will not change, but the distance between two front wheels...will that affect the speed.

I think that the Euro Velo guys have been using wider tires. The trick is finding ones that are fast.
