Hello,
I'd like to get HPV racing started at my kids school here in Sacramento, Ca. I'm inspired by the Australian International Pedal Prix and the Energy Breakthrough series down in Australia. Any suggestions on how to get this started in the local school district? Who to contact to organize such an event? What skills/resources are involved in building these vehicles?
At this point I pretty much have no clue.
Anyone else want to do something like this here in the states?

Basically, I want this in the US:

Sincerely,
Daniel Runyan

P.S.
And of course, I think it would be cool if these vehicles eventually became accessible to the general public :-)

Hi Daniel,
I get the same thought stuck in my head every once in a while. Here are a couple sites to check out for build info.
http://mrrecumbenttrikes.com/race.html

http://www.pinnacletrikes.com.au/trikes/index.html

http://trisled.com.au/

Trisled does a lot with the pedal prix folks and could probably give you information on how to get started.
There are a few obvious things.
1 Talk to school officials to see if there is any interest.
2 Do a show and tell. If you have a velo of almost any sort the kids will love it and that could generate interest.
3 Find out about permitting if you would like to try racing on local roads.
4 One of the main issues is always going to be safety. IIRC all pedal prix racers must have roll cages.
5 You have the link to the pedal prix site. Write them directly for tips to get started.

As far as building the vehicles. One would probably want to know how to weld if starting from scratch. I would have kids look into getting low cost used trikes to begin with, add the rollbar and make a coroplast body. Those bodies are inexpensive, reasonably sturdy and easy to build.
