I just got my first bent a week ago, have had a big smile on my face every day riding. I would love to read more firsthand reports of all kinds. Here's mine:

Good story. Keep spreading the word about recumbent bikes. Sometimes you will change a mind and help someone. One person at a time.

Be prepared for resistance. I was reading a book about the history of cycling recently that described the transition in popularity from the high wheelers (penny farthings) to the diamond frame "safety" bikes" that most people ride today. The bulk of the shift in popularity took place in a period of about ten years during the 1880-1890 era. Riders could easily see and understand how much easier and safer the new style bikes were than the old. Today high wheelers are mostly found in museums and the occasional parade.

The superiority of recumbents over diamond frame bikes is not so easy to see. The main calling card of recumbents is greater comfort, but that mostly appeals to older riders and people who ride long distances. The better safety of recumbent bikes - no flying over the handlebars in an emergency stop - is harder for most people to grasp. Aerodynamic benefits only kick in at higher speeds than most people go. And aero benefits only work for some recumbents, not all of them.

So please continue to spread the recumbent cycling gospel far and wide. But keep your hopes modest about how easily and quickly you can make converts.

Safe riding,
Joel Dickman

These three prevent most accidents: seeing, being seen, & (usually) common sense.
