REFERENCES: Results posted in HPV newsletters, Wisil Race Results webpages and, in some cases, message forum boards.
Dates: 1993 through July 2007 by Mike Mowett. All changes or additions welcome. mowett@aol.com

NOTES: All times acquired to 0.01 seconds, Speed (mph) converted from these and rounded to 2 decimals. Just times 1:20.00 or better listed. Currently over 100 entrys on list including some ties for certain times.

I'm not sure if Sean Costin's 1:08.24 at Northbrook in 1997 was with or without the "boy in the bubble" fairing since websites conflict on what he was riding. Frank Geyer's 1:12.94 at Northbrook in 2001 was disqualified for a lane violation and a 1:15.00 time awarded, Since this was an arbritary amount of time taken away, I'm keeping the original 1:12.94. The Blood Sweat and Gears streamliner that Ed Gin rode was renamed the Great White streamliner so its the same bike.

CLASS CONVENTIONS:
The conventions and rules for defining the classes have changed over the years, but I believe the following designations are roughly equivalent when making historical comparisons:
Full Faired = SuperMod = Unlimited = Streamliner
GT Class = SuperStreet = Partial Faired
Modified = SuperStock
Non-faired = Stock

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
Major Taylor, Indy, IN: 333 meter outdoor velodrome Results are from 1000 meter pursuit races held there in 1998. A 1000 meter is the same as a Kilometer effort, just two racers were on oppossite sides of the track trying to catch each other over 1000 meters.
San Jose, CA: 336 meter outdoor velodrome with 22.5 deg banking Results are from 1000 meter pursuit races held there in 1998. Called Hellyer Park velodrome.
Blaine, MN: 250 meter outdoor velodrome, wood, 43 deg banking, opened 1990, 19th IHPSC held there in 1993, see Oct 1993 HPV news. Called National Sports Center.
San Diego, MN: unknown course
Kenosha, WI: 333 meter outdoor velodrome, oldest continually operating in US, concrete.
Northbrook, IL: 382 meter outdoor velodrome - repaved in 2005, epoxy coated concrete, Named: Ed Rudolph
Waterford, MI: Waterford Raceway, 3 turn flat road course, asphalt, Kilos started to be held there in 2003 as part of Race Series.

I'm sure that Sean, Dave L, and Hans could have good input on this, perhaps I speak too soon when unveiling my findings:

-edit March 03, 2011
WORLD STOCK "NO FAIRING" RECUMBENT RECORD ?
1 Kilometer Standing Start Time Trial

OFFICIAL WRRA STOCK RECUMBENT WORLD RECORD PROGRESSION:
Sean Costin, 1:08.22 , home-built no fairings, Kenosha, 2005
Sean Costin, 1:07.50 , Velokraft NoCom, Kenosha, 2008
Sean Costin, 1:06.793 , Velokraft NoCom, Apeldoorn, 2009
David Wielemaker, 1:06.517, M5 carbon lowracer, Apeldoorn, 2010

OTHER CONTENDORS TO THE WRRA WORLD RECORD
[b]Peter Groeneveld , 1:06.61
, home-built no fairings, Köln, 1997 - this run predated Sean's run, but now supersceded by David's 2010 run
[b]Sietse de Laeter, 1:02.9
, 35.56, 57.23, 200 meter velodrome, Winter Comp, 2006 - according to Hans Wessels posts, Siestre rode unfaired and would have been a good candidate for the record, but unfortunately, no official timing was made.

When comparing the two lists it seems that Peter Groeneveld's 1:06.61 in 1997 may be a best for an unfaired recumbent - hence a stock recumbent world record. Currently, Sean Costin is recognized as the holder of this mark, but that might not be correct if Peter's mark stands.

In US, a Stock recumbent as defined a bike with no tail fairing or other fairings not part of the frame - "splitter type" recumbents like the NoCom are ok, wheel disks are ok. In Europe, a Stock recumbent can be defined as a bike which includes a tail-fairing. This has caused some confusion when comparing marks before.
According to Reference One I listed, Dave Larrington said Peter had no fairings on his 'bent. However I realize now that the link no longer works! I had downloaded that Usenet page some time ago, but can not find it at the moment. Can anyone else verify information about Peter Groeneveld's bike in 1997? Was Peter Groeneveld's mark set on a Velodrome at Koln in 1997? This may not necessarily exclude it from a WRRA record.

Only Sandro Bollina's 58:13 in the fully streamlined Lightning X-2 on a straight-line infield at Interlaken in 1999 is the only HPV mark faster than the Absolute UCI record of 58.875 set by Arnaud Tournant on a "regular" unfaired upright bike at high-altitude LaPaz Bolivia on a circular velodrome in 2001.

Fred Markham was recalling his 1:07.++ time from memory. See reference#1 above - LINK NO LONGER WORKS! This was during his days on the national/Olympic team.

Jeff Solt also rode a streamliner for a college team at the 1993 Colorado Speed Challenge.

58.880 Chris Hoy – comes very very close (missed by 0.005 seconds) the next day.
Chronicals his attempts on World Absolute Kilo Record at high-altitude LaPaz Bolivia. Anyone want to sponsor a HPV race there? Beautiful scenery high up in the mountains. Check out the starting block device for the bike and rider. We need one of these "start-gates" for our HPV races - well I guess its not a one size fits all!

FWIW the BHPC is (tentatively) planning a 1 km event at next year's Worlds (http://www.bentrideronline.com/gallery/1/wc2008flyer1.pdf) and hopefully we'll be able to get some nice times on that runway

The 1 km TT standing start is a difficult one to time correctly. The start is very important.

These are all legal timed runs:

During CV 2007 we had a unfaired 1000 m but the timing wasn't record legal:
http://www.ligfiets.net/agenda/race.php?id=229

Ofcourse there are a lot of tail faired 1000 m runs at the BeND races each year but no legal timing there either:

Hi Hans, Thanks for the many links. Those are great info.

I think I asked this question before, but what do:
J = ?
V = ?
O = ?
P = ?
represent at races? What vehicle types?

Also interesting that if you click on the number 1,2,3 telling the order of finish etc on the Bend sites ex: http://www.ligfiets.net/agenda/race.php?id=194
it gives you a plot of the velocity (km/h) vs time (minutes) for each lap. Most had their quickest lap as lap 2 of 4. Afterwards there is a drop in velocity. You are one of the few riders that had their fastest lap on the last lap.

Thanks Dave,
Those are great links with pictures of the vehicles in 1999. This is very useful.

Maybe you should put a special prize for anyone who can break Sandro Bollino's 58.13 second unofficial best (at least what I can find!) record in the Kilometer! Good luck with the planning and execution of this event. I've never been "across the pond", but would sure like to get there one day for a competition!

To All,

The WRRA recently voted to have separate records in the Kilo and 200M to allow for differences in straight line and Velodrome courses for each category. This information is not posted yet, but I expect we will have it soon. We have not come to any decisions about wind speed and slope yet, but I imagine something similar to IHPVA standards will be discussed. This opens up some grey issues regarding past performances which may not have all the requirements documented, but we'll have to discuss what performances may be considered for ratification based on whatever anecdotal evidence evidence that exists.

Records still need to be applied for with supporting documentation just as any other records organization requires. We are looking to ratify Hans' one hour rear-faired attempt but we have still not received anything from him yet.

The WRRA voted to combine rear and tail faired classes, but the record will note which one was used.

We also voted that any new faired records must exceed the unfaired record in the same category.

Additionally we voted that any junior performance that exceeds the adult performance in the same category will hold the record in both classes.

Sean Costin WRRA Commissioner.

Yes, I am not a 1000 m specialist. I am a slow starter gaining speed every round. I like the hour a lot better.

Did you mean to post that front and rear fairing classes would be combined?

Overall, I think it's a great, positive step forward to start individually indentifying more classes than just "overall" times and records. The more classes, the more people can be involved in what people will eventually realize is a really great, and comfortable sport.

Personally, I like lots of classes. You get more people involved. For example, my wife's uncle was the Washington state champion in the low hurdles, 80+ age group. Do you think he would have been out training if there wasn't a class for him?

I’ve gathered Kilometer race results from the following events and organized them by
Straight-Line Kilometer Races (all classes: Full, partial, non-faired,*unclassified)
Velodrome Kilometer Races (all classes: Full, partial, non-faired,*unclassified)
*unclassified = in many cases there was no description of vehicle or pictures available.

Lists are cut-off at 1:20 and faster
Any official recumbent records for non-faired or tail-faired categories as recognized by WRRA, will have to be researched further.

The following events from were found to have Kilometer Race Results
BeND 2006,
BeND 2005,
BeND 2004,
BeND 2003,
BeND 2002,
BeND 2001,
BeND 2000 – can’t find any evidence that there was a kilo event
World Champs 2007
World Champs 2006
CycleVision 2007, no kilo at 2006, 2005, 2004 CycleVision, (can’t find results for 2003 and back)
Winter Competition 2007
Winter Competition 2006
Interlaken 1999
Many other Interlaken events are just Swiss Rail HPV championships
Race in Paris 2003
Race in Paris 2004

Based on references of European race results provided by Hans Wessels and Dave Larrington,

Hans, could you provide more information about Sietse de Laeter? I notice that you finished 2nd to him at BeND 2006.
He has rode the 1st, 2nd 5th, and 6th fastest Kilometer times on the Velodrome in Europe in the past three years, yet I can find no picture or description of his vehicle.

At CycleVision 2007, the results state he rode an Optima Baron XLow
http://www.ligfiets.net/agenda/race.php?id=229, but no description if tail-faired or non-faired.
In 2007, at the World Champs in Belgium, on a straight-course he rode a partially faired bike, according to the classification in the results.

It seems Sietse's times could qualify him for world records in either tail-faired or possibly non-faired recumbent kilometer.

This is Sietse at the WC2007 in Belgium, it is clear his isn't going to the max because he is still smiling:

All velodrome races at Cyclevision 2007 were unfaired. Sietse will definitely be a very good candidate for the world record 1000 m, both unfaired as tailfaired. Unfortunately we never had a legal run with him.

Hi Hans,

Lots of people smiling in those photos!

How does everyone manage to go so fast and still smile!

So at the World Championships 2007 in Belgium, Sietse rode with tail fairing + Optima XLow to a time of 1:10.6 on the straight, uphill, poor weather course. Hardly his best, when considering without tail fairing at CycleVision 2007 he rode 1:05.8 on the 200 meter velodrome.

What do you consider legal and non-legal runs? Is the timing at each event I listed automatic or hand-timing? The previous three attempts at Kilometer world record on Kenosha velodrome in US were done using automatic timing. However, the riders started just behind the line and as soon as they rolled forward they tripped the tape and timing started. We do not fire a gun to start timing, hence the rider has control over their start.

The timing tape was approximately 1.5 meters long and positioned only over the inside lane of the velodrome. On the end of the 1st and 2nd lap on the 333 meter velodrome, the rider had to ride in the outside lane in order to not trip the timing system - which could register multiple hits. This added to the actual distance that they rode, making it more difficult to achieve a record.

Traditional UCI kilometer attempts use a 5,4,3,2,1,0 timing count-down and the rider explodes out of an elaborate starting gate with front wheel positioned precisely on the start line. See video of Chris Hoy's run.

FYI: those people are waiting for the start and aren't moving at all. Smiling has gone overhere: http://www.rikkie-fotografie.be/fotogallery/WK%20ligfietsen%20zolder/index.php?#link

Yes, conditions a the track in Zolder were bad. Hopefully we can do a decent run with Sietse in Colonge.

Most 1000 m runs were timed with the NVHPV's AMB electronic timing system. Because of the antenna riders start aprox. 1 m before the antenna so it doesn't trigger when they are standing. This one meter makes a huge difference in total time as can be easy be proofed with some simple math. Some riders try to get advantage by trying to get an even longer flying start (especially at the winter competition 2006 in Sloten, these are more flying start times as 1000 m standing start, but as everybody had the same length of flying start it is still a fair competition). All those runs with only the antenna are not legal runs in my opinion (and in the opinion of the WRRA too).

At the winter competition 2007 in Alkmaar we used a light barrier to start and stop the time. These times are legal times. Now I am trying to get tapeswitches for our AMB system making it a lot easier to do legal runs.

A way to use tape switches and not have to swing wide until the last lap would be to not arm the stop function until after tha beginning of the last lap. All of the electronic timers I have ever used in time trials for motor vehicles had separate arming for start and stop, to allow independent timing of sucessive laps.

My gas is up to $.99 a burrito, $5.99 for premium and I'm only getting 20 miles to the regular burrito.

Ya, but we use a shoestring budget system. I did see some cool proximity sensor units with built in relays in an electronics magazine which would be perfect for us. I think they were $50 each, which is half the price of a timing tape. Just set them up on stands. Still need the wires though, and probably not as accururate as the tapes.

Warren,
Couldn't we have a simple button off switch on one lead to the stopwatch that the timer would hold down as the rider passed the tape in lap 2? I guess if we wanted to do it cheaper we could unscrew a wire nut for lap two and get it back together by lap 3.

We tried that. The timer electronics sense a change in the resistance when the tape is re-connected and it stops the run.
