Opus

My gas is up to $.99 a burrito, $5.99 for premium and I'm only getting 20 miles to the regular burrito.

T minus 10 months starting today! Nov 13 to Sept 13.
I've got to:
- study up on Fluid Dynamics, Aerodynamic Theory
- learn composite fabrication from my good friend John
- find a large workshop
- build a streamliner
- train really hard
- work the whole year, saving up vacation time
- get my minivan ready for a cross-country trip
- pack a bunch of things...

Oh crap, I'm behind already.. :-(

Al;
Let me be the first to put a vehicle in the "Will Attend" list:

GeeBee 55/55 ( to be renamed 55/58).

Type - FWD streamliner delta trike
Designers Georgiev/Hill
Builders Myers/Hill/Branch/Wianecki
Drivers Myers/Hill/Cook Team Olderfahrtz

We're doing things ass-backwards. The trike is virtually finished right now! (Very un-HPV tradition). Now I just have to start training so I don't get too badly shamed by a couple of mid 70 year old team mates. ;-)

I had to go back and look up the meaning of 55/55.

"Garrie Hill wants to go 55MPH under his own power, before his 55th birthday, so to perform this feat Garrie needs a fast streamliner. He's planning on completing it for use at the 2008 WHPSC at Battle Mountain."

But if Garrie is using this at the 2010 WHPSC, why not 55/57? Or is the 2010 event just after his birthday?

Perhaps we can start a new records category of:
Age (Years) + Speed (MPH) --- Current Contenders include:

Note this was just a random sampling of people I grabbed off my lists at http://www.wisil.recumbents.com/wisil/fastest_list.asp.
If I had lots of time, I would search for more entries.
And see, people thought I was asking them their ages all this time out of sheer interest! It's been for a very scientific study!

Hi Richard!
If you go 54 mph this year, (at age 74) you'll be the New King with a score of 128!!

Mike, That's my list

Your list is:
Step one: get in the Norus
Step two: train in the Norus
Step three: race the Norus at every HPRA race in 2010
Step four: race the Norus at Battle Mountain
Step five: improve on that experience for 2011.

Garrie: Trend setter(I hope)

Upon thinking about Ages further, I realized that I was in fact penalizing Juniors too much in the above list. So I changed the criteria to make Age 30 = 0 pts. I'll consider this a person's athetic peak.

Then for every year less than 30, you get one pt
and for every year greater than 30, you get one pt

Now a Junior aged 15, gets the same number of points as someone aged 45.

Some results of this method (vs the old method): Many of the top places on the earlier list haven't changed. Juniors have moved up though. Charlie Ollinger's 57 mph at age 14, rightfully jumps ahead of Jacob Maesen's slower 55 mph at an older teen-aged 17. Charlie and dad Thom's marks are about equal on the list. Charlie is just above Jay Henry (several years older and several mph faster) for what seems a fair comparison. Macky, age 16 and Warren, age 44, are both 14 years away from 30 years old. Both went 64 mph, making them equal on the list.

I took out any runs from other than Battle Mountain. Its too confusing to compare old marks at low altitudes and earlier less speedy machines. Putting in a mark from other than Battle Mountain should probably earn BONUS pts. (example: Fred's 1980 mark at low altitude on a much less aero bike, his 1986 Dupont mark with a short 1.8 mile run-up, the Cheetah mark and Jacob Maesen's low altitude mark) All deserve maybe 10 to 20 points extra. Without a Bonus: in a comparison of Tanya to her dad's early marks, they seem about equal. Tanya's female 50 mph mark at age 15 is shown as more impressive than her dad's male 50 mph mark at age 23 on a prone bike. It's about equal with dad's 65 mph world record in the Gold Rush at age 29 near his supposed athletic peak.

Hi Dean,
I added you to the lists above!
Wow, you might have been the first Masters aged rider (over 50) that went over 55 mph! Tom Nowak holds the distinction of the first 50 year old over 60 mph!

Hi Dennis,

I rode almost 40 miles on my upright this past weekend - that was the extent of my training in the last month.

I have 7 miles total on the Norus this year - I pedaled around using the Crank Brothers pedals (with low Q-factor) you gave me! I didn't have the top on.

I don't realistically see myself building a streamliner from scratch anytime soon. The Ford Challenge all of my time this past summer. I was off a bike for two months. My grandma just died two weeks ago. More heartache.

Next year...

Great thinking! however, according to scientific studies quoted by the Cenogenics Foundation most men reach their physical peak around age 27.

Anybody want to have a human powered Hill Climb Battle up Mt. Lewis next year? Its only 4564 foot of climbing in 11.8 miles, once you leave the main road. Click on Elevation in the box at right when this Route pops up.

"Anybody want to have a human powered Hill Climb Battle up Mt. Lewis next year?"

We could do that every day instead of riding down 305. We could have qualifying Monday morning.

I'm 58 and went 62, so I think I'm at the top of Mike's newest list. Is there a $25,000 prize?

Hi Larry,
Are you kidding me - you're 58!??? Wow, you don't look a day over, well I guess I was guessing 40. Now, no cheating and making yourself older just to move up my lists! You're very close to Richard's 2nd place mark now!

So we could have some new record categories, like:

First Age 50+ over 55 MPH - Dean Pederson (2004, Age 51, 55.42 mph, Rotator Coyote)
First Age 50+ over 60 MPH - Tom Nowak (2006, Age 52, 61.11 mph, Orange Varna)
First Age 55+ over 55 MPH - Larry Lem (2007, Age 56, 58.6 mph, Bent-Up Beluga)
First Age 50+ over 65, 70, 75 MPH - Fred Markham (2008, Age 51, 75.78 mph, Varna Mephisto)
First Age 70+ over 45 MPH - Richard Myers (2008, Age 72, 48.79 mph, Mini-Moby)
First Age 55+ over 60 MPH - Larry Lem (2009, Age 58, 62.04 mph, Scimitar)

In 2010, can we see the ??....
First Age 55+ over 65 MPH - Larry Lem (2010, Age 59) ?
Second Age 55+ over 55 MPH - Garrie Hill (2010, Age 58) ?
First Age 70+ over 50, 55, 60 MPH - Richard Myers (2010, Age 74) ?

Hey Larry - I amended the lists - Ahhhhhh! Age 48 sounds more like it!

Anyone know how old Speedy is?
I have him listed as 48 years old in 2002, when he did his lifetime best of 61.88 mph in the Big Gun. But....
in the 2001 results, Sean says..."Steve Delair begged me all day to run since the Blueyonder Team and Matt Weaver did not run. I decided to let him and he went 50.93 MPH in his rather practical racer named Frankenstein. Not bad for a 50 year old guy."

So this would have made Steve the first 50+ year old to go 50+ MPH.

Then in 2004, on Thursday night, Dean Pederson, age 51, became the first Age 50+ to go 55+ mph with his 55.42 mph run. On this night, Frank Geyer was racing the Big Gun. The next night, Friday night, Steve Delaire, age 50? or age 53? rode the Big Gun to 59.95 mph, perhaps becoming the 2nd person Age 50+ to go 50+ mph. This was so nearly the first person over 50 years old to go 60 mph - a mark that Tom Nowak later claimed in 2006.
