Nobody thought a spaceship looking trike would go very fast, either. Oops.

It will cause a buzz if Obree can go 43+ mph in testing unfaired.

That would be a start. But it would only tie Mr Costin's best.

Will Obree's pedals be behind the rear wheel or above it?

I'd say both, off hand. The fairing is really going to be narrow below the knees and elbows. I think he should be able to tough this riding position for a 10 minute "time trial".

Think of anything lower than the elbows as "splitter plate".

I'm not understanding the gears below his stomach. Intermediary drive / shifting? I suppose if all the shifting happened there it would keep the wheels narrower.

Right now, it's a cool kick-bike.
I also am anxious to see the rest of the drive train. I hope he's got someone else working on the fairing already.
Most of all, I hope he's having fun!

Right, Larry!

Splitter plates only work in windtunnels, maybe. On BM streamliners they are called unnessary frontal area and drag.

From the article.
"To reach that speed, he will be pedalling in a gear, which is around three times bigger than the top gear on a road racing bike. The pedals turn a chain which drives one set of gears, which then transfer the power to the rear wheel through a second chain, doubling the pedal power of a conventional bike. "

Looks like a mid-drive.
Hope he puts some foam under his neck in case of crashing.

I think superman bars would look great on this design although it would lengthen the body.

Thanks Larry for the walk down memory lane. I should have stuck with that design. IT was rideable.
I am actually returning to something similar but not this year.

So I found another photo of the bike, this time in his kitchen where all of his best bikes come from.

One good thing about prone recumbent bikes if ridden unfaired is that aero bike helmets can be worn in the intended position.

2 Front wheels... Is he using friction drive on the road?

2 Kojaks? Seems this model may be experimental for developing ergonomics & geometry.

It doesn't seem like he is so well funded that he has extra sets of wheels. Is that even one inch tubing? How rigid will that be under his considerable power?

Know your history folks, Obree built his hour record bike for something like's $150 out of pocket, it's his style, low buck and intuitive. Think A-Team "When a plan comes together it's a beautiful thing." I'd be disappointed if he was going about developing this bike any other way, it classic Obree. The hour record bike was a totally original concept and it worked out well. If there was Facebook in '93 as he was developing his hour record bike the comments likely would have been much like theses. I am enjoying myself being along for the ride, so to speak. Obree is amazing.

As much as I would like to see Obree do well, look at this: http://www.hptdelft.nl/en/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=19&Itemid=50
That is what it takes to go 80mph. Decades of experience(which Obree had in time trialing), and/or tons of engineering. Neither of which he has in the extreme world of streamliners.

Obree will have succeeded where many have failed even if he doesn't set a new world record. I admire any man who has the courage and conviction to do what he is doing. Few have the metal needed to make the heart of a champion and none have it more than a man with the courage and conviction to follow his dreams. Regardless of the outcome at Battle Mountain few of us will forget the journey of Obree and some of us will become different men for having followed his story.
