Hi. Our school is competing for the first time this year and we have a few questions that we didn't find answers to online. This competition seems to be a fun challenging event, but documentation on it is hard to come by. We'd appreciate anything you can give us, even if beyond what we're asking. The questions are as follows:

How much are entry fees typically in the past, or for this year if the information is available? And are there any other costs that we may have to cover once we get to the competition other than entry and hotels?

There isn't a consensus on the speed bump dimension as far as we can tell, but can we safely assume a maximum height, say 6", and know that it will be the largest bump we face?

We are entering from western NY so does the 'design region' mean here, or rather where we have designed the vehicle to be operated?

Are there any links to well-documented past races? We really have no idea what we're getting into so it would be great to see an example of a design report and how it is graded or the track and how things are run. It might be asking a lot but we're in the dark so anything is appreciated.

Thanks so much for any and all help you can give us.

Hey there, always glad to see new people on the HPV forum.

As for the entry fee, I can't remember the exact figure but I think it is somewhere between 300-600 dollars. Hopefully someone else can give you a more accurate figure.

And yes, the maximum bump height is 6 inches. Although more important is the ramp on either side of the bump. You can then do the trig and figure out how high your vehicle needs to be.

The design region is the region that you are designing the bike for.

There is actually very little documentation at the ASME races. Probably because everyone seems to be fixing their vehicles while they are there. As for design reports, Rose-Hulman has a number of reports on their website that are available for download. The grading rubric for the design report is in the rules and many details on the track are in there as well. Unfortunately, the more experienced teams are as much in the dark as to how the course will change since the venue is different every year, the promoters interpret the rules differently, and ASME has changed the course and class rules every year for the past three years for whatever reason so the course and obstacles have changed significantly. We are all going to be surprised (hopefully for the best) when we show up on race day.

Unfortunately I won't be seeing you at competition (most likely) but I wish you the best of luck.

Hi,
This is also SIUE's first year and I have possibly a dumb question.
Can you buy a pre made frame and then modify it or does the frame need to be built from scratch?
Thanks!

So I'll try to answer some of these questions as best I can.

As far as the speed bump the dimensions have been specified in past rule books, I'll try and find that tomorrow, no guarantee that they won't change though. I'm surprised they didn't specify in this years rules.

As for an off the shelf frame, I don't believe they're expressly forbidden in the rules (worth a good read-through to make sure though) , so as long as you comply with safety requirements (rps and harness), and your design report justifies the decision you should be alright.

Also, last year at the west coast competition, the speed bump was not to their specifications. . .

At risk of taking a stab in the dark, cook up something quick with plywood, screws and subflooring glue.

I think Trisled in Australia still sells kits.
