I have joined forces with the Colavita/Zipp Time Trial Series in Western Ohio to create a new racing opportunity. The opportunity is two fold. First is a special catagory for nonfaired recumbents to see who is the fastest in the land. This catagory will have it's own awards. Second is the chance for any recumbent, faired, trike, male or female, to compete in the regular time trial for the C/Z medalions. But, this is no ordinary "meet out in the country and get timed my a stopwatch" event. The race organizer(ex pro cyclist), Roger Bowersock was named as one of the top eight race promoters in the U.S. Besides having a beautiful course that circles a lake, there is a start booth, 1k, and finish arches, and tons of give aways. It is as close to doing a TdF time trial as you may ever gets. See more info on the www.recumbents.com calender at http://recumbents.com/wisil/racing2012/orchallenge.htm . Post questions here, or email me.

The course is basically flat with a few grades. No climbing. That is where I did a 56:52 in 2010. If I remember correctly, Gary Painter, Francis Manfried, and Kurt Spurle all rode in the 52s. Fast, fun course! The start area is closed to traffic, and intersections and corners are manned my race personel or the sherriff's dept.

According to MapMyRide that course looks Flat! All elevation is 0% around the lake course. This link is on the excellent flyer that Thom prepared.

I registered too. Any ideas for a Club Name that is asked for at registration time?
"Team Lowboy"

I've seen internet domain names used by athletes in the past at other TT's. I put this down at the past TT

I'll probably register under recumbents.com. That's easier to find than team lowboy if anyone does a web search.

Is the total ascent 121 feet? I am not used to using MapMyRide.

I'd like to attend, but it is far away and right before Battle Mountain. I am sure that I'll be working on / testing and modifying the BM bike.

Just fly out, Larry. I'll put you up and loan you a bike. As the Fiesta Island TT champ, I would love to see you there.
I have had some questions about the ramp. NoComs have been down it. Lowracer approved, and very fun! Roger is proud of the fact he has never let anyone fall on takeoff. This year Roger is supposed to mount a big screen on the trailer that will post immediate results from the chip timing. Wow.

Also, in addition to being flat, all the pavement is good. Some is pretty new. Several miles are on a eight foot wide bike path shoulder. Wind is generally out of the SW. The beautiful course passes marinas, fine resturants, and at least three state parks.

Some photos of the 40K course ...
http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/uprightmike/Celina%20Ohio%2040K%20Recumbent%20Challenge/

Thom and I drove around the course this past Wednesday (Feb 29). The course looks really good!

A few photos from this really great course!...

Heading East-bound along the north end of the lake, Smooth pavement!

20 mph speed limit in state park, yeah right! Should be able to do 25 to 30 mph on this course

Bike Lane is along most of the route, as it circles the lake

Nice pics, Mike. We measured the loop at 24.7 miles. That's pretty close to 40k. We also found that any section of the pavement I remembered as being rough had been repaved. We didn't see any bad pave. All good to great.

Does the stop signs being "patrolled", mean they will be manned and the people manning the stop signs will keep cars stopped when bikes approach so the bikes can blow through? What will happen at the stoplight?
Just curious. Thanks.

If I were to attend, I'd need to bring my bike. It is the bike that is fast.

Last time there was law enforcement at critical intersections, course workers at corners, the entire starting road closed to traffic, and a dedicated lane in some areas. That doesn't mean the whole course is closed to traffic. It is still public roads, but every effort is made to make racing the best it can be. It would be great to see the Fiesta Island champ at this race. Let me know if I can help.

Hey Thom,
Got my aero tuck in the groove yesterday. Saw 35 on the speedo with headwind while attempting to get away from CudaBoy. No elbows in the breeze. Got no mo to tuck in.

Only 3 months till the Big One.

Alan, post a front view to see if you get the Gillette stamp of approval. Yes, Cudaboy is tough to shake! Had to toss my chain off before I exploded trying.

Thom,
No front photo yet but this is the helmet I'll be using for the next TT on the 6/3.

I had grind off the back end of my helmet so it did not touch the rear wheel. The current helmet is now a non legal bent racing helmet. This Catlike has a much smaller rear profile that should clear the wheel.

That is one of the reasons I went to a 406 on the back of my ChoppaCom. Now I can wear my Briko(I wish!). Gary Painter was showing me his helmet. I think it was a Giro. It was black, dimpled, and had a visor. The tail wasn't very long. He said it was very fast, and he knows fast. He said it was $200 off the internet. I dream of getting one.
Btw, we gotta get Chris Cortez to tuck those wings in. His body position is great, but....

I know...I've had a few people tell me this. I'll have to sort this out before the big race.

Sounds like a chopped NoCom with a 406 rear wheel. Planning to mill a 76T chainring for that 406?

Alan,
You can just buy 75 tooth and 80 tooth chainrings now from Raptobike or RecumbentParts.com. I've bought a few big chainrings (65, 70 & 75 tooth) from them. Thom calls me "Mike the Masher" because I like to push a big gear. I rode a 65 tooth with my 650c Challenge and now a 62 tooth with my 700c M1 lowracer. You know what they say about guys with big rings, maybe I'm just trying to compensate for errr.. well some other part!

Right, Randy!

AA, I have a 73 with my 451 tire, and 172.5 cranks. With the 406 I am using 170 cranks to pick up a few more rpm. For sprints I have a 90 tooth sprocket and the 172.5s.

True! ha ha ha!

I learned a good lesson yesterday about long chains - always carry a quick-link. After I sped away from a strong Triathlete guy, I lost my long chain - going over a hard bump on a bridge over a creek at 35 mph (the quicklink popped free probably because the chain which is already criss-crossing itself rubbed together at just the right point where the quicklink is).

Anyway the guy on the upright flew by me because he was flying along too, but he turned around and came back to me, and said "wow, you were flying!, what happened?", and offered me a quick-link from his saddle bag, which really saved my butt from a long walk back to my car.

Thom & Mike,
I no longer mash large gears. Big ring and big cogs = small gears.
Much better for speed work with the benefit of quick recovery time after a hard effort.
