What does the latest research indicate on smaller profile helmets suitable for fitting in tight streamliners. I thought there was a thread on this.

These Berns seem good and they come in every color of automotive primer . At 70 bucks, this looks doable.

Research:
The greater the thickness of the polystyrene used for energy absorption, the further the head is allowed to travel before it comes to a stop (as the expanded polystyrene is compacted), the slower the decceleration of the brain, and the less risk of injury to the brain.

If the energy-absorption layer was "too thin", hopefully it would not pass the safety organizations tests and would not be certified. We don't have anything else to rely on.

Not sure if this qualified as "research"... but

Weights of various helmets including the Bern
http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/uprightmike/Helmets/

Comparing the Bern (smaller) to the Casco (larger)
http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/uprightmike/Bern%20vs%20Casco%20helmet/

Heres a BAD pict of me wearing the Bern at the Ohio race. My head is way off the neck rest as I'm trying to strain, accelerate, and probably relieve pressure off my gluteous maximus which was well nasty... Remember I fell trying to corner too steepy at 30 MPH (rookie mistake), had some serious road rash, but at least I didn't hit my head, so no idea how the helmet would perform

Hey Mike,

Your idler looks really low there. Are you sure it did not hit the ground in the corner, causing your crash? Seems unlikely I know, but it looks low in this picture.

I am pretty sure that is what happened. His idler is all chewed up.

Is that a Bern Brentwood?
From their website, it looks like they make 3 sizes with the smallest called S-M. But your helmet sticker says S 54 - 55.5 mm.

Guys I crashed because I was too aggressive in the corners at nearly 30 mph. I was experimenting with throwing my head around and leaning my upper body too much in the corners, and lost it on the corner pushing the bike out from under me into the corner onto its right-idler side. So "no", the idler didn't cause the crash but rather it got chewed up after I laid it on its side on an angle. It was my only 2nd time racing the bike, and first on a crit course like that. Thanks Thom for patching me up from the rash! Thanks Warren for filming the race and my comeback for the win!

Larry - I forgot the exact model of Bern this is, but the Brentwood sounds correct. It is actually a ladies model, if that matters. The salesperson pointed out a small flower on it, that I wouldn't noticed otherwise. but hey it fits, I'm a guy, and I don't care! I also wear a ladies Specialized wind breaker on rides, because well it fits!

I've used a nutcase roller blade helmet in the carp streamliner. The outer plastic is thick and much heavier than a bicycle helmet.

Sean,

The small helmet you used in the Norus streamliner in Iowa was a Trek Circuit, size 56-60cm. It is compact and has lots of ventilation.

I've wondered if the downhill bike racer full-face helmets might provide more protection in a streamliner, but they seem kind of bulky and not as ventilated as one would like. They look like they would provide extra face and lower skull protection.

Hi Dan. I have a downhill helmet for when I go to a DH park in West Virginia. It is thick and heavy. Pretty much a motorcycle helmet. Lots of protection! Charlie has a full face bmx helmet that is lighter.

Nutcase S-M ordered at local shop. They only had polka dots pattern in stock. I got the sparkly silver one. It looks like 3/4" of padding on the top and sides.
