Excellent 7 minute video showing why the Netherlands is the world's premier cycling nation. Cycling is an integral part of the transportation infrastructure.

Hello Mike,

As in all advertising, in real life not everything is as brilliant as they want you to believe. I know, cause i live in the Netherlands.

However i know no country where cycling is as intergrated with all things in life as here.

Everybody that first comes to our country is impressed with the huge numbers of bikes at trainstations. All those bikes cross some line in the "brilliant" organisation and on a fine day a few trucks full off wrongly parked bikes are driven to some yard where the owner may retrieve his bike.If he somehow finds out who took his bike and how to retrieve it.

However even my parents at 73 at 67 use their bikes regularly, they take the bike for the 3 kilometers to the next town, because parking the bike is much easier and the trip takes about as long by car if you include the walk to the various shops. My 5 year old daugter can cycle to school and to friends. I work with a guy thats 63 who rides every day the 14 km to work by bike and later the 14 km back. Nobody thinks thats strange.

I have two recumbentshops nearby, just 30 and 35 km. Living in holland as a cyclist is great!

I agree, although many European countries are following the Dutch. In Paris, France you can rent a bike to travel around the city. It's highly recomendable when you are a tourist, but it's also widely used by the Parisians.
A lot of Dutch cliche's aren't true. Not everyone wears wooden shoes, we don't all live in windmills, our fields have more than just tulips, we don't all smoke pot BUT I think I can say that EVERY Dutch citizen can ride a bike and has got one or more bikes.
Recumbents are rare but since the current economy and petrol prices, I see more and more recumbents.
