I'm having some difficulty welding .028 4130. I was able to weld on some pinch bolts without a problem with my Mig welder, but welding a mitered tube is proving to be a challenge even on my lowest settings. The tubing edges are just burning back. Is this hopeless?

Would preheating help?
Any tricks?

Have you tried the "stacking spot welds" method? That is the only way I can weld .028 with my Hobart Handler. Even with .024 wire I can't run a bead.

can it be done ?
probably
welding is like reading a book ... one single letter at a time
focus on the molten puddle
start on the thicker material then flow the puddle to the thinner material
too hot can only be controlled by pulsing the trigger
good fit always helps

Its not easy. Try welding a small spot and let it cool for a second and continue with on and off with a higher wire free rate to blob it on. You can also cut and slit a small piece of tubing to fit inside to act as a doubler.

I think I can do it with this advice. I have a brzing torch, but I dont have the bottles any longer and this would be a P.I.T.A.

I was told once to get a something heavy and copper to touch near the weld as it'll absorb heat and not stick. Never got around to finding an item to try it with. Quick search gave something made just for the purpose http://www.ebay.com/itm/COPPER-WELDING-SPOON-RESTORATION-CLASSIC-CAR-BODY-WORK-HEAT-SHIELD-/110834471789

I tried a spot method and that worked well enough. I used more power, and that worked better. Then I blew a hole turned it back down and was cruising along and was about to finish but ran out of wire.

His son needs braces, the copayment was outrageous, so Sean-the-tinkerer thought he'd give it a go. Bicycles - braces, fairings and epoxy - fastening braces to teeth, it's all related.

Sean, you should be able to rent gas and oxygen tanks form a supplier like Airgas, Sounds like you can get by with the small ones. Another option would be the MAPP and Oxygen bottles for a small job like this.

I'm going to want to grind off the shrapnel before I send in any pictures. I'm making the fairing mounts for my yet-to-be-named or illustrated streamliner. They will have suspension and be extremely adjustable. Usually guys build the shell then try to mount it to the bike. I didn't like that method since it usually makes for shoddy craftsmanship so I'm building the mounts first. This way if my shell isn't done I can just whip up a pink coffin with a Varna windshield when I arrive at the hotel.

I'm am releaved to learn that "pink coffin" does not appear in the urban dictionary.

Larry,
Thanks for the idea on the braces, but decided to go with my soon to be patented full facial clamp. It's important to start while bones are still soft.
