Putah Creek #1 Results

http://www.zensurweb.com/bikes/davis_time_trial_03_21_2012_overall_results.pdf

13th Greg Thomas 0:22:35 (26.57) Tail Faired Low Racer
38th Peter Borenstadt 0:25:13 (23.79) Mango Velo

I am not sure if those above results are correct. They may have got Greg and Peter confused.

Mark,

No confusion, Peter was 38th. I didn't feel fully recovered from my back injury and it took 18 seconds to do a three point turm at the 180. Need to practice that. Hopefully next time I'll be faster. Greg was spinning the Zox out on the return leg at 34! Next week he is going to try my faster bike with a bigger gear.

I was impressed by Alison Tetrick doing 28.53 mph!

Those are some snazzy, matching lime-green tires...

It is interesting that Greg was pushing 34MPH on the way back. I was 30MPH flat out on my TT bike and that was only in certain places. He is definitely a strong rider. Do you reckon the ZOX is faster than a Bacchetta Stick bike ?

Mark, the Zox with the tailbox is fast! You are a much stronger rider than me. If I ever show up on a normal bike I am afraid you will see how big the difference is!

BritCpower's blog rules. I'd like to see him on a Morciglio M1. 27mph? No problem.

Mark,

With the Optima tail fairing the Zox is definitely faster than a stick bike. It also has a few other modifications, such as lowered bottom bracket (8.5" BB to seat), 18 degree seat angle, spoke covers and front splitter (similar to the NoCom). All this with a rear suspension. I would let you try it in the TT, if you are curious, but I'm not sure you would fit. It is possible to slide the seat back about 3", but it would need to be more upright. Otherwise the seat support would slide past the end of the frame.
It is available for a reasonble price, if anyone is interested. It is set-up for someone around 5'-8" with 30" inseam.

Is that the single sided steering one?
Mark Meuller has one he brings to OHPV PIR usually. I think he's somewhere near you.

Yes the single sided steering beast. It interests me because of the ultra low seat angle (should be fast on Putah Creek). I just googled Mark Meuller. Wow, He was doing 44MPH time trials on his GT3 with Coraplast fairing. Nice numbers. I think he might have sold it in 2010.

I think Mark Mueller hit 44 mph at Battle Mountain. He had some trouble at Hellyer with the bottom of the Coroplast shell dragging on the pavement in the turns, as it was super low. He also had that trike faired with one of his "Windwrap" front fairings and a spandex sock.

Just checked the weather forecast for this Wednesday: 61 degrees, 13mph WNW wind, reducing to 9 mph late in the day. 10% chance of rain.

I'm going to try the Mango again, this time with 170mm cranks (up from 160) and better sealing on the apron. I also removed the "storm strip" on the theory that this may improve the flow over the fairing, especially going into the wind at a low angle. We'll see.

Greg will be racing my carbon mid-racer with an M5 tail fairing. I installed a 60 tooth ring for him just in case...He may do the 40K in his Quest on April 25th.

99% sure it was at the Portland track last year. That thing is my favorite trike, for sure. Handles amazing, too.

Weather is looking good for tonight but it may be real windy. I spent this afternoon putting new seat on the Catrike, fitting disk covered rear wheel and other minor tweaks ready for Saturday's "Beat The Clock". It seems a shame not to ride it tonight so it is three wheels for Putah. 25m03s to beat for a personal best.

Marks coroplast faired trike was his greenspeed slr. That is the side stick steered ultra low trike.

In 2003 I think he had a mueller fairing with a full sock on a gt3at ohpv pir.

Fairings on the front and rear wheels will make a difference for you, Mark.
Coroplast, carbon, milk carton cardboard or mylar rc model film all have been used with positive effect.
Dump more than a pound by substituting strapping tape for you mesh seat. It also may have less stretch depending which strapping material you use.

Putah Creek #2 Results:

29th Mark King: Catrike 700: 25m17s (23.73mph)
34th Peter Borenstadt: Mango Velo: 25m36s (23.44mph)

I thought it was a really hard night but there were some 20 minute times out there.

Results:

There is a guy on a recumbent that rides Putah Creek at the same time as the races and I see him drafting the racers all the time. He drafted me once for a while. If you read this forum please dont do this as it is hugely distracting and why not try racing yourself. Putah Creek is a non drafting event.

I've seen that guy a few times as well.

Removing the "storm strip" and changing the cranks to 170s didn't do much for me, I was 23 seconds slower than last time. I thought I'd do a slower start, because the last time I blew-up after a mile and half and had to slow down to recover. Looks like all that strategy did is make me even slower. I see Sandra is nipping at my heels...

As I was working on the velo after the race, I discovered my right disk brake was rubbing pretty hard, so hopefully less auto-braking will be beneficial next time. I also switched to Duranos, which seem faster and easier to accelerate than the heavy, 40mm CSTs.

Last Sunday, as I was slowing down to make a right turn on a green light, I got nailed by a young punk on a mountain bike, who was running the opposite light at a good clip (on the wrong side of the road). He hit the front of the Mango and caved-in about a 12" diameter area on the nose. Fortunately, no one was hurt and I was able to pop it out with some missing gel coat and a few small cracks being most of the damage. After he hit me, he staggered into the traffic lane and just kept on going...

Sorry to hear about your accident Peter. Once you figure out the 180 degree turn you will be flying on PCSD in the Mango.

Bents have a hard enough time getting respect. Hopefully Mr TT Drafter will correct his behavior.

Perhaps "Mr. TT Drafter" is waiting to finish his Jenny Craig program before he starts racing in earnest. ;-)

I'm really impressed by the 15-year old averaging 28.62 on a DF. Mysteriously he was 16 and slower during the first TT...
