Hi All,

I have been deleting many spam posts almost daily from the web forum, plus this scammer:

Robert L Scott Jr.
124 S Clarks blvd, Clarksville IN
47129
812-725-0770 502-640-5120 502-230-1265 812-239-9048
PayPal: rip24_2000@yahoo.com

Who posts recumbents for sale to the for sale page using a variety of names, but doesn't really have bikes to sell is being a pain in my a$$. I have deleted about 30 scam postings of his in the past month or so.

So I can do a couple things. does anybody object if I don't allow anyone from from a China address to sign up on the forum? That will stop most of the spam.

As for Mr Scott, I am open to suggestions. Maybe someone who lives near him can pay him a little visit.

If it gets to be enough of a pain I will just kill the for sale page until I can make it more difficult for the scammers.

Thanks,

-Warren.

I'm okay with it. Can you make a 20 post minimum to post an ad? Or someone can just drive down to Clarksville and show Mr. Scott what the classic Chicago "Curb Job" means.

Could you just make anyone from a China address prove they are real to you before allowing posts? As I myself was in China for 7 years, I do know that there are real people there that do read the forum (although admittedly few actually post here or at BROL).

I have fresh spam for sale. Please email me for spam.

Honestly, I think this is one of the better moderated forums. There isnt much spam, at least users like me are not affected (of course, i am not aware of all the work you do behind the scene).
From my point of view, status quo is a good status.

I doubt we understand the time drain Warren has to deal with. Maybe see what someone like Slowtwitch does about it. We don't care about people who lurk. Maybe there is a way to make someone qualify before they post.

Warren - thank you for everything you do to keep this website in check. Its a shame that scammers exist. Maybe make a suggestion that in order to post here, they must also post the same item for sale on ebay, and provide a link to it - and all transactions should be handled through ebay, paypal etc where they have more strigient rules and protection for buyers who get ripped off by scammers. Of course, that would take away the function of having this as its own separate buy/sell site, and become more difficult for people to post, as many probably aren't ebay sellers, they just have one bike to sell.

Warren,
If any of Mr. Scott's addresses or phone numbers are valid report him to the FBI's fraud department. They may not get to him right away, but at least he will show up on their radar. Then reply to one of his contacts to inform him of this. See if he goes away.

I was thinking about adding a question to the signup process that anyone who knows anything about recumbent bikes might know. Suggestions?

Unfortunately, the FBI only cares if you are the victim of a fraud.

Warren, the forum moderators on the OHPV forum have done a bang-up job of keeping the creeping grunge from hitting there. I recall that Bill Bates implemented a variety of strategies a while back. It must have worked- he's had time to put some cool headlights on his WAW velomobile: http://www.ohpv.org/forums/index.php?topic=1139.0

They seem to use bots to dig up old threads. Can you add rules to delete posts by a new user on threads more then 9 months<?> old?

People ride recumbent bicycles because:

5) Medical reasons.

A recumbent bicycle has:

3) Dropped handlebars.

4) A diamond frame.

5) A saddle.

A diamond frame refers to:

1) A wedgie

2) Carbon Fiber composite.

3) A recumbent rider.

To reduce weight, the frame of a recumbent bike can be made from Carbon Fiber composite

True or false

Typically, a recumbent bicycle has:

1) A small wheel in front.

2) A long chain.

3) A rider sitting down.

4) Geese honking as it passes.

5) A Carbon Fiber composite frame

Depending on the cutoffs for those tests, I could have easily failed either one.

I may be able to implement the multiple choice scheme, but don't want to make it impossible to sign up. This forum is freeware, and as such is not supported. It's difficult to make changes to it but I had added several anri-spam tweaks in the past.

Thanks for the suggestions,

-Warren.

I'll take "Make mine Suppine" for $500 Alex

Warren,

Is there anyway to set it up so that a person wanting to post a "for sale" has to email a personal request submitting the proposed add by email to an intermediary rather than posting directly? The actual for sale add could only be posted by the intermediary who would be someone trusted by Recumbents.com and who sets up an email address just for this purpose. Ideally the intermediary could be someone other than yourself, which would take some of the load off your shoulders.

Don
