This year, 2012, there may be a historic gathering of Hour Record athletes at Battle Mountain. If Graeme Obree shows up, for the first time, IHPVA, WRRA and UCI Hour record holders (current or former) may be present at Battle Mountain.

These organizations represent three different type of vehicles:
IHPVA: records for streamlined human powered vehicles
WRRA: records for stock recumbents without streamlined fairings
UCI: records for conventional upright track bicycles

These 2012 athletes include:
Sam Whittingham, Canada: (5X) IHPVA hour record holder for streamlined human powered vehicle.
Barbara Buatois, France: (2X) IHPVA hour record holder for streamlined human powered vehicle and (2X) WRRA hour record holder for stock recumbent.
Aurélien Bonneteau, France: (2X) WRRA hour record holder for stock recumbent, plus (1X) absolute hour record holder for "stock" recumbent.
Ellen van Vugt, Netherlands: (2X) IHPVA hour record holder for streamlined human powered vehicle.
Graeme Obree, Scotland: (2X) UCI record holder for track bicycle.
Sean Costin, United States: (2X) WRRA record holder for stock recumbent.

If Damjan Zabovnik (1X) IHPVA record holder, and Francesco Russo (1X) - new best streamlined mark, or Fred Markham (4X) IHPVA record holder showed up, their names would add a lot of marks to the above list! Also it remains to be seen if TU-Delft (3rd best ever last year at Dekra) or Aurélien Bonneteau or Francesco can set a new One-Hour record during an upcoming attempt at Dekra between now and Battle Mountain.

Some Hour Record Trivia:

1) Name the first person to simultaneously hold the IHPVA Hour Record, a WRRA Hour Record, and a IHPVA 200-meter record at Battle Mountain? Hint: 2009, 2010

2) Name the first men's WRRA Hour record setter (formerly held WRRA record at the time) to ride a streamliner at Battle Mountain? Hint: 2011

3) Name a vehicle that will be Battle Mountain this year that set a Hour record but will not have the same rider which set the Hour record riding it? Hint: Varna

4) Besides his two UCI world records in the One-Hour, what other two UCI world records did Graeme Obree set during his remarkable track career? Hint: they are in the same event, and it is this event, not the One-Hour or 200-meters flying start on the velodrome that might actually be the most similar to the distance and effort required for Battle Mountain.

5) Which rider at Battle Mountain has the most hour records in either IHPVA, WRRA, and/or UCI? Hint: see above

I suspect a French girl may be involved in some of these trick questions.

I guess no one likes Trivia.... Here's the answers

Some Hour Record Trivia:

1) Name the first person to simultaneously hold the IHPVA Hour Record, a WRRA Hour Record, and a IHPVA 200-meter record at Battle Mountain? Hint: 2009, 2010
ANSWER: Barbara Buatois who set the IHPVA Hour record twice in 2009 at the Ford Speed Challenge in July 2009 riding 82.12 km (51.027 miles) then two days later riding 84.02 km (52.208 miles) in the Varna Tempest. Two months later she went to Battle Mountain, becoming the first lady to break 70 mph and 75 mph. Following Battle Mountain, in October 2009, she twice set the WRRA Women's One-Hour record going 46.048 km (28.613 miles) October 17 on the Apeldoorn Velodrome in the Netherlands during the Record Weekend there, and two weeks later October 31 on the world-famous Bordeaux Velodrome in France she went 46.348 km (28.799 miles). In 2010, she came to Battle Mountain holding all the records for IHPVA hour, WRRA hour, and IHPVA top speed, and set a new IHPVA top speed record of 121.81 km (75.69 mph) which still stands.

2) Name the first men's WRRA Hour record setter (formerly held WRRA record at the time) to ride a streamliner at Battle Mountain? Hint: 2011
ANSWER: Gert-Jan Wijers, was the first men's athlete who held a WRRA record to race at Battle Mountain. Gert-Jan held the WRRA record twice at 50.389 km (31.31 miles) becoming the first nonfaired recumbent rider to exceed 50 km on the Alkmaar velodrome in 2008, and then going 51.287 km (31.868 miles) on the Apeldoorn velodrome in 2009 at the Record Weekend.
This year, Aurélien Bonneteau, the current WRRA record holder at 52.074 km will race at Battle Mountain in the Altair3 from the French IUT Annecy team. As we all know, Aurélien Bonneteau recently set an incredible new Hour mark of 56.597 km (35.168 miles) which also broke Chris Boardman's UCI mark. However, this is being viewed as unofficial because he used shoe fairings.

Sean Costin, who set the first two WRRA records, and founded the WRRA. Sean last raced at Battle Mountian in 2004, which was before he set his first WRRA hour record in 2006. His best officially is 103 kph (64 mph) but has an unofficial 70 mph run from the year 2002 when timing failed. Both of these runs were with the CoSlinger Special. Sean holds the WRRA 200-meter sprint record on his unfaired NoCom. He has full streamlined fairing for his NoCom, designed with help from Raymond Gage and professor Dave Sianez from Connecticut State Central University. Can Sean also hold the IHPVA 200-meter record too. He is an incredible sprinter and time trialist, who has also set the WRRA Kilo record several times.

3) Name a vehicle that will be Battle Mountain this year that set a Hour record but will not have the same rider which set the Hour record riding it? Hint: Varna
ANSWER: The Varna Mephisto set the IHPVA hour record with Freddy Markham in 2006 on the Nissan Casa Grande track. Fred also achieved a lifetime best of 77.22 mph in it at Battle Mountain, and was twice over 75 mph as well. Note: prior to this Sam Whittingham had also set a Hour record in the Mephisto way back in 1998. Fred just sold the Varna Mephisto to Greg Thomas who will pilot it at Battle Mountain. Greg has reportably had it up to 55 mph on several occassions in practice.

ANSWER: Graeme twice held the 4000-meter pursuit world record and was world champion in this event. Sometimes this race has been mentioned as comparable to the effort required for a Battle Mountain run by Sam Whittingham.

5) Which rider at Battle Mountain has the most hour records in either IHPVA, WRRA, and/or UCI? Hint: see above
ANSWER: Sam Whittingham who has set the IHPVA Hour record five times in his career with the following marks:
90.598 km, 56.295 miles, Varna Tempest, Ford track, 2009
86.771 km, 53.918 miles, Varna Diablo3, Nissan track, 2007
84.22 km, 52.33 miles, Varna Diablo2, GM Opel track, 2004
83.72 km, 52.01 miles, Varna Diablo2, Continental-Texas, 2003
79.14 km, 49.17 miles, Varna Mephisto, Blainville-Canada, 1998

Jim Glover will be at BM this year as well. He holds the conventional position flying 200m record from 1986.

Holy cow - another star at Battle Mountain! I remember Jim Glover on his Moulton back in the late 80's. Though I was just a kid, and I don't think he'd remember me. Years later I had the opportunity to ride and race Dave Kennedy's fully faired Moulton in the drags at Battle Moutain. Though I couldn't manage to ride it with the full fairing. Back in 1989, at the IHPSC in Michigan I remember Bryan Obermeyer riding a fully-faired Moulton 32.5 miles in One-Hour around the 2-mile MIS Speedway oval.

Here's a link to my "Fastest HPV List" that shows Mr. Glover's achievement in 1986 - still the record for a conventional cycle using an "upright" riding position....

51.19 mph, 82.38 kph, Jim Glover, Moulton Liner II, 1986 IHPSC Vancouver, BC, Canada, 3 meters elevation, 58th fastest in the world at the time it was set.

Ellen just set a new personal best last Satterday 74.04 km/h for the one hour.
We had some small problems withe the tires and it was to hot 30 C.
It looks like we still have to change some small things on the bike before the 85 km/h will be broken by the ladys.

Greetings Hans van vugt
