Awesome! i was looking for updates today on the web and couldn't find any. I needed to be on Twitter according to the AeroVelo site! - it looks like the pilot/Cervelo R5 frame is just held in tension in a web of wires below the truss that supports the rotors - I don't see any stiff structural spars betwen the pilot and truss. Is this true? If so, that looks like a neat trick to save weight. Way to go guys! I'm glad to know you all personally! Its like an honor, because I was very little I watched Public TV where Paul MacCready and Bryan Allen was building the Gossamer Albratross to fly aross the English Channel, and now you guys are doing the same, inspiring a whole new generation!

Todd looked like he was just loafing while pedaling away 5ft in the air, but I bet he was generating some serious wattage.

WOW! - I was just flipping through the April 2013 Popular Mechanics magazine and it has as its the "Centerfold" on starting on page 68, a 2-page photo of Todd and Cameron as part of seven-page story documenting their AeroVelo Project and the University of Maryland's attempt to win the Sikorsky Prize! Run out and get a copy now at the newstands! The cover says "Survive Anything: 52 Disaster Tactics" which you can also read if you feel a need. I noticed an add for TerraTrike too. The article also mentions the University of Toronto team's Ornithopter, their success at Battle Mountain, and an upcoming Mythbusters show Todd and Cameron will be on building an ornithopter! Can't wait for that!

A Popular Science article from last June 2012...
http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/aviation/diy-flying/could-atlas-the-human-powered-helicopter-capture-the-sikorsky-prize-9340860

It is really cool that years ago I used to read Popular Mechanics and Popular Science when they had articles of human powered achievements, and now I've actually gotten to meet and know these highly talented people who are at the forefront of human powered achievements! I am really happy that people like the University of Toronto team continue to inspire us all as to what is possible! Go win that prize!

Today has been unbelieveable - First I saw the Popular Mechanics article and now on TV, I saw the Snowbird Ornithopter from the side taking off(?) then from the front flapping its wings as part of the first few seconds of a Honda Commercial for their 2013 Honda Civic Hybrid touting great ideas. Do you guys know about this? Wow, with that kind of luck, I can only hope that next I see them on the national news saying they've won the Sikorsky Prize!

Skip the add (which is also for Honda), then go to the main video

I'm trying to find a link to the commercial in the following:

on Mar 15, they got up to 3m, but a rotor clipped a line, and the copter went down. Todd was OK, but there was heavy structural damage.

The article describes Todd as wiry. Hmmm, not the words I would use. A super cool guy, though.

crashed on Mar 15, and again on April 19. It has been very hard to watch this.

quick quote from facebook:

"We hit 3.3 metres and 65 seconds on our last flight. Flight looks really good! We have submitted the flight to the American Helicopter Society, but will be waiting for validation before making any official statement."

This might go down (excuse me Up!) as the most finanically rewarding one+ minute (65 second) bicycle ride in history! Think about that, even if you did the 1 kilometer in 1 minute in the Olympics, is your gold medal worth $250,000?

PS: I'm not a business-man, only a bicycle riding geek!

I sometimes have customers who decide to buy one of my bikes in a 'split second'. I have never calculated my per minute rate on the basis of that :-)

It would be an amazing effort by Todd and Cameron and their team. I'm not sure who was powering the helicopter. Was it Todd or Trefor?

Arnold.

This is an amazing achievement - worthy of world-wide mention. Their orinothopher video quickly went viral and I think had about 400,000 views within the first few weeks of them releasing it. Let's hope they have a similiar great video of their helicopter flight. The Unversity of Toronto has been a phenomenal story for the human powered movement!

Mike, you have to ad up their design time, build time, and testing time. Yikes! None the less, it shows what big brains, big thighs, and big budget can do. What will be their next challenge?

there were four flights on thursday. Trefor did one trim flight, and then Todd did a series of flights at 1.5 m, 2 m, and then 3 m.
