Larry Oslund will be making an attempt on the 100-MILE TIME / 6-HOUR DISTANCE records this Sunday August 6, 2017 at the Northbrook Velodrome from 7 am til 1 pm. These are UMCA Ultra Marathon Cycling Association and WRRA World Recumbent Racing Association recognized records.

A small group of volunteers and officials (after we took the test) including
Florian Kowalik - as Crew Chief
John Burrell - as UMCA official
Daryl Hanger - as UMCA official
myself (Mike) - as UMCA official
will be watching over Larry's attempt.

All are welcome to show up and cheer him on! The track will be closed during his attempt. We will be using the HPRA timing system

Larry will be riding his unfaired recumbent. Not sure exactly which one yet: John Morciglio's Velociraptor (650 front/ 700 rear wheel) which he raced to a 50-lap record speed of about 30.3 mph 2 weeks ago at Northbrook or
his trusty Cruzbike Vendetta which he just competed in the 4-person RAAM with this past July with Jim & Maria Parker and Kevin Gambill. https://3000milestoacure.com/event/2017-raam-cruzbike/

Larry is 57 years old now.

CATEGORIES
This will make him eligible in the following UMCA Categories
Gender: Menís
Age: Master (Age 50-59 years)
Bicycle Type: Recumbent (unfaired),
Rider Configuration: Solo (not Team)
Course: Outdoor Track (not Road)

100-MILE CENTURY GOALS
Larry would like to top Michael Secrest's Century record that stands at 3:46:16. (26.5 mph avg) It is the fastest non-faired solo Century on record with UMCA. It was set in an indoor velodrome.
Larry has already gone about 3:47 (26.4 mph) average on his Cruzbike during a solo practice session on an old autoracing 1/3 mile oval now used as a bicycle track near his hometown in North Carolina.
Larry is the current WRRA record holder for the 100-mile Non-Faired Master category 3:59:31 25.07 mph 40.346 kph with his Cruzbike Vendetta on the Lumberton NC UMCA course 10/11/2015.

6-HOUR GOALS
Following the first 100 miles, Larry will continue to ride and hope to establish a new 6-hour record with about a 25.5 mph average. the current WRRA mark is about a 24.1 mph average by Melchior Popp set on his Velomo Firefly highracer during the Record Weekend ATC 2016 in Aldenhoven, Germany in 2016.
There is no record currently for a UMCA Outdoor track on a Recumbent, thus any distance Larry rides would technically be a new record, pending ratification. (I think).
For comparison though the UMCA record for a standard bike in Masters 50-59 is held by Walter Poell of Austria 120.577 miles at 20.10 mph avg set just over a month ago 2017-06-30. This is slower than the WRRA masters record. Larry says his goal might be to try to better the overall UMCA 6-hour record for a Standard Bicycle in the Age 18-49 category. This is held by Mitchell Anderson of Australia who rode 154.177 miles at a 25.7 mph average earlier this year on March 3 , 2017.

Looks kind of non-aero, doesn't it? Photobucket has deleted all my pictures, so I now use Imgur.

It has been posted on another forum that Larry broke the 100 km and 100 mile records unofficially until documented. He rode the new prototype Cruzbike that Thom Ollinger designed. Way to go Larry and Thom. Any news on the 6 hour record?

UPDATE: Data is submitted to the UMCA pending review.

The times we computed based on the UMCA formulas and the HRRA's AMB automatic timing tranponder system data are as follow:

Larry Oslund, Aug 6, 2017
100 KM TIME: 2 hours, 19 minutes, 33.2 seconds
AVG SPEED 26.72 mph
AVG SPEED 42.99 kph

100 MILE TIME: 3 hours, 48 minutes, 10.1 seconds
AVG SPEED 26.30 mph
AVG SPEED 42.32 kph

Unofficially, Larry has the fastest outdoor UMCA track record, but just missed the overall record of Michael Secrest, set indoors. He was ahead of this record until about 60 miles. He did not continue riding to complete a six-hour record attempt.

Also, Larry Oslund recently completed in a ten mile time trial on the Lowes Motor speedway in Charlotte NC. Larry dominated the elite field with an average speed of 31.8 mph(!!!). A few of the df time trialists wetlre actually over 30 mph, which would win most races. I believe Larry can go even faster.

I saw Larry's youtube video of that race Thom. I am naming Larry The Wizard of OZ! WOW! He also has his video up on youtube of his 10 mile TT on a wet road. He told a guy that he didn't know if it was worth the long drive for a 20 minute race. The guy said, yeah right, 20 minutes. Well, Actually it was around 18.52.

I did not continue for the 6-hour record. I was pretty tired and we started pretty late and were running out of time. I may attempt it on my home track this winter once they get done resurfacing it.

I hope I was close with what was said Larry. I was laughing too hard at the thought of the guy when you was done with your run! Next time you can tell him it might not be worth the 5 hour drive to go sub 19 minutes. Haha.
