Thomas,
You are an amazing athlete.
You rode 74.296 km on a badly injured ankle two weeks after your crash. You went faster for one hour than than 73.68 kph world record of your countryman's Theo Boss UCI 200 meter world record of 9.772 sec. So if you put even an injured superhuman athlete in a superfast HPV, amazing things are possible!

Scroll to about the 1:16 mark, where Hans is asking for a "chair please". This video captures the true nature of our sport, success and pain! My mom took this.

I hope you have a speedy recovery! I know injuries can other be a pain for a long time, but you can learn to live with them and enjoy cycling.

Thomas I am so glad that you came to Michigan, yet sad that you were in so much pain at the end. Still an amazing ride! -Mike

No worries. Genetics don't change due
to injury, and Thomas' are first rate. And
since he is way younger than many top
racers, he has plenty of time for his
big comeback. No matter how bad the ankle
is, there's always the brand new Swedish
ankle replacement to consider.

Swedish Ankle Replacement. All you need is a golf club and an Escalade.

Yesterday I went, after a second opinion from a sports medicine doctor, for an MRI scan in the hospital. Officially I only get the results next Monday by the surgeon, yet I could not resist to ask the radiotherapy technician if she could see anything abnormal on the scan.

Although she should not diagnose, and still had to compile the images into 3D images, she could tell me that the tendens looked good. However, she could see fluid around the talus (the bone where the tibia and fibula rest on), and that "the ankle just did not look like, what an ankle should look like".

My understanding of her response(s) was that I probably have damage in the ankle joint bone(s) (talus?).

Although in recent months (!) all the specialists told me that I could just walk and bike, while it does not hurt (much), that probably wasn't good.

Anticipating the diagnosis from the doctor, I immediately decided not to cycle, and again use crutches when walking.

Now waiting what the doctor says on Monday...

I'll keep you posted.

Thomas

Hi,

Just came off the phone with the doctor;

The tendens looked ok, they healed good.
The talus has a bruzing on the frontside, just under the cartilage. The cartilage itself was damaged too.

According to the doctor they can not operate or medicate (other than painmedicine). It could take up to (another) 6 months to recover, and the pain to be beareable for me to resume training...

That means, I continue walking on crutches, no or minimal cycling until everything is back to normal.

It looks like the season 2010 is over before it started...

I will try to come to BM. To be seen if I'am going to ride.

My promise for 2011: You will see a new Dutch record in the 200m, and one hour!!

Thomas

Mike,
Thanks for posting the pix. I hadn't seen the skid mark one before. Pretty impressive. Rest assured that we are already working hard to get the vehicle back together, along with many "upgrades" (our MO apparently) for BM '10.

Thomas,
Sorry to hear about the long recovery, gives new meaning to the title "LongJohn". Listen to your Doc. Bones, tendons, and cartilage take much longer to heal than skin and muscle because they have very little blood flow in comparison. When recovering, a lot of your feeling better can be misleading, as it can have more to do with muscle healing and fitness, which come on far more rapidly than bone and tendon healing. The waiting will just make you hungrier, and give you better focus. Good luck.

Raymond

The Ford Challenge made an impact on cycling in the state of Michigan. The League of Michigan Bicyclists (LMB) contacted me to write an article about the Challenge. It was the Cover story and centerfold of the Winter 2010 issue.
http://www.lmb.org/index.php/news/lmb-news-blog/mi-bicyclist-magazine/259-michigan-bicyclist-magazine.html

The LMB also publishes an Annual Ride Calendar featuring most of the organized events and rides in the state. The LMB has always been recumbent friendly featuring photos of recumbents in the past. This year several riders at the Ford Challenge made it into the calendar

Many of the excellent photos were taken by Colleen Dalgliesh of the Avos Arrow team.

Thanks to all who participated in this event!

Due to a math error (where I said 38.37 inches = 1 meter, instead of 39.37 inches = 1 meter),
I made an error in the computation of 100 KM average speeds for the following four riders.
These are the corrected values below. So their records actually GOT FASTER!!

WORLD RECORD Men's 100 KM, set after One-Hour on Sunday.
Sam Whittingham, Varna Tempest, 1:07:02.159, 55.615 MPH, 89.504 KPH
Sam Whittingham, Varna Tempest, 1:07:02.159, 54.203 MPH, 87.231 KPH

WORLD RECORD Women's 100 KM, set after One-Hour on Sunday.
Faster than previous men's 100 KM record of Lars Tuetenberg,
Broke Ellen's 100 km record set in the morning.
Barbara Buatois, Varna Tempest, 1:12:15.297, 51.598 MPH, 83.039 KPH
Barbara Buatois, Varna Tempest, 1:12:15.297, 50.288 MPH, 80.930 KPH

WORLD RECORD Women's 100 KM, set during Six-Hour run.
Ellen Van Vugt, KLM Speedhawk IIb, 1:42:20.246, 36.431 MPH, 58.630 KPH
Ellen Van Vugt, KLM Speedhawk IIb, 1:42:20.246, 35.505 MPH, 57.140 KPH

PERSONAL BEST, Men's 100 KM, set during Six-Hour run,
Hans Wessels, KLM Speedhawk IIa, 1:38:37.266, 37.803 MPH, 60.839 KPH
Hans Wessels, KLM Speedhawk IIa, 1:38:37.266, 36.843 MPH, 59.294 KPH

UPDATE:

Yesterday I rode the last race in the wintercompetition in the Alkmaar Velodrome.
My ankle felt good enough to ride and I decided to participate.

I decided not to do the qualifying 1000m sprint race and just start in the "tortois" criterium (50 min).
After some laps of warming up my ankle felt fine, and the limiting factor appeared to be my legs and lack of training (just started commuting again in January).
Because several riders where slower, I could ride my own race and hold a constant speed. Several laps before the end I got overtaken by Ellen !!! And shouted: "What's happening, Ellen is overtaking me!!". In the end I managed to limit here lead to 5 seconds, but still got beaten...

Here are the results;

http://www.ligfiets.net/agenda/race.php?id=367

And here's my data:

http://www.ligfiets.net/agenda/grafiek2.php?id_race=367&x=times&y=speeds&t=laptimes&ids[]=38257

And a video by Pjotr320:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bk51fjuOmn0

I think I rode a nice steady race at hour pace.

Thomas (it's looking good for the rest of the year)

Awesome job Thomas and Ellen!
To average over 45 kph (28.2 mph) for 50 minutes and still finish in the middle of the pack in the "Turtle" race, i can't imagine how fast the "Rabbit" race is!! Thomas, I hope your ankle continues to get stronger and stronger. In time, all your muscles are probably getting stronger around the injury. I hope you can set a new Hour record and Dutch sprint record this year! And if you had an eyepiece linked to the camera, you would have seen Ellen drafting you before sprinting around you!

Mike,

Ellen came in second and I third in the turtle race (see the "s" indicator for schildpadden). So we where the fastest in the turtle group.
If the hare group was faster than the list shown, the current hour record holder would have a BIG problem!

Thomas
