CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES:
Clubs - Boys and girls may join baseball and soccer
teams as well as Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations and/or the Big
Rock 4-H Club.
Crossroads Christian Youth Center – Located just west of Big Rock, this
is a non-profit, non-denominational organization where those
Kindergarten through high school can go and learn more about Jesus
Christ and develop a personal relationship with Him while enjoying
fellowship with others. It’s a place for youth to go where they will
know they are loved by God. Some of the activities include devotionals
and fellowship with others, music, and games.
Big Rock Historical Museum - Gives children a glimpse of what life was
like growing up in Big Rock over the past 100+ years. Antique furniture,
clothing, photographs, and a variety of other household items, all
donated by townspeople, are displayed. The museum building itself is
uniquely fascinating, as it was originally a corn crib which has been
renovated, with a farmer’s field still surrounding it. Next to the
museum is a historical Big Rock house which has been moved from in town
to its current location to house the upcoming Big Rock Library.
Blackberry Farm’s Pioneer Village – 15 minutes away. For a day of fun,
not only will children be amused here, but there is also a lot to learn
about life during the “good old days” by watching period craft
demonstrations and wandering through numerous museums. A small petting
zoo, catch & release fishing, and pony, hay wagon, carousel and train
rides are offered amongst 54 acres of trees and gardens. Even Big Rock’s
original train depot has been moved to this park-like setting.
Phillips Park – Located in Aurora, this 325+-acre park has a small zoo,
mastodon gallery, sunken garden, picnic areas, aquatic center and winter
recreation area.
Outdoor Water Parks – There are two water parks, each about 15 minutes
away. Located across from Blackberry Farms is Splash Country, and in
Montgomery a more elaborate one is currently under construction.
Sugar Grove Family Fun Center – Situated a short distance from the
Montgomery water park, this locality offers putt-putt golf with a
driving range, go-karts and bumper boats.
Waubonsee Community College – Located in Sugar Grove, preschool through
high school aged children may take part in a variety of programs,
including art, fitness and music.
Children’s Theatre – Various children’s plays may be seen throughout the
year at a number of playhouses within 45 minutes’ drive, with Sandwich
Opera House and St. Charles Steel Beam Theatre offering theatre
workshops for kids.
Camps – Day camps are available in the summer.
Country Fairs – Kane County Fair, Elburn Days, Sandwich Fair and Big
Rock Plowing Match feature livestock, baking, handiwork, gardening and
plowing competitions with added parades, concerts, demolition derbies,
and rodeo grandstand events as well as carnival rides.
Nearby Towns’ Summer & Fall Festivals – Geneva Swedish Days (June), St.
Charles Riverfest (June), Naperville Ribfest (July), Sugar Grove Corn
Boil (July), Geneva Festival of the Vine (Sept.), St. Charles Scarecrow
Festival (Oct.). These offer a variety of activities to peak children’s
interests including carnival rides and games, concerts, good food,
fireworks and various competitions.
