Links

Last checked and updated 9/10/03

This is by no means a comprehensive list of recumbent links. There are many sites that have large collections of HPV links, for-sale lists, and so on; it makes little sense to duplicate them here. Some of these sites are shown below:

Links pages and recumbent information sites
MARS flyer PDF - Handy informational flyer with a FAQ, info about the club and other useful resources. Adobe Acrobat format, requires the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, available at http://www.adobe.com
FAQ - Here's a link to a very British and humorous FAQ from HPV list regular, the estimable Dave "Legs" Larrington. There's also a page that shows a direct comparison of the relative merits of recumbents vs. uprights (click HERE), courtesy John Foltz.
Recumbent/upright comparison page - Not quite a FAQ, but almost.. a direct comparison of the relative merits of bents vs. uprights.
Recumbents.com
- Now run by the redoubtable Warren Beauchamp of WISIL fame, this is where we're lucky enough to be hosted. Lots of good info.
Bentrideronline.com - This e-zine is rapidly becoming REALLY good. They're definitely on top of the recumbent scene, and are giving RCN some real competition. Well worth a visit!
Kevin's Recumbent Information Page - Extensive collection of links.
RSC Speedbike - A German recumbent club... good links, on-line calculators... cool Euro stuff.

General bicycling information sources and cool stuff

Biketracker
- A free web site which allows you to keep a virtual log of your bike rides.
Sheldon Brown's Harris Cyclery site - A must-see resource. Got a question? Go here first.
C.R.A.N.E. (Century Rides Across New England) is a great directory site with what appears to be a comprehensive listing of all centuries in New England (as defined in the classic sense... NY, NJ and PA rides are not listed). Includes contact info, comments and ratings for many rides.

Products of interest

Polygenex
- Incredibly bright, neon-orange gloves, made of wicking material. Haven't tried these yet, but they look interesting... good safety item.
Paul Components - Makers of a very light linear-pull brake (aka V-brake) that is notable for its ability to handle large-diameter wheels. See the Pharobike description page in the Projects section of this site for more details.
Pantour - Makers of a truly unique product, a front hub with built-in suspension that weighs only 220 grams, making it the absolute lightest, most compact way to get front suspension on your bike. See the Pharobike description page in the Projects section of this site for more details.

Recumbent dealers
Recumbent-friendly dealers are few and far between. The list here is arbitrary and does not necessarily reflect the current state of affairs. A good way to find a dealer is to visit the manufacturer's websites and check to see if they have a dealer listing.

Bicycleman - Peter Stull's shop in Alfred Station, NY is well regarded, albeit far away from NYC (300 miles). Peter now owns manufacturing rights to Linear recumbents.
College Park Bicycles/Mt. Airy Bicycles - Located in Maryland, these two affiliated shops are not bent-exclusive, but they're very bent-friendly and have a large selection of bents in stock. Larry Black is the man in charge. Mt. Airy is 230 miles from midtown Manhattan.
Jersey Bents - Hamilton Square, NJ. The website lists several brands, but its' safe to assume that it's severely out of date because one of those brands went out of business at least two years ago.

Mail-order/online shops
Not local, but invaluable, because it can be darned difficult to find some of the stuff you need. Need a 1-inch wide Presta tube for a 16-inch Stelvio? Good luck at your LBS. Call one of these guys.

Angletech - Based in Colorado, these guys made a name for themselves by taking RANS bikes and putting a lot of ultra-high-spec components on them. Now they've diversified and are making high-quality aftermarket parts for all bents. Nice stuff.
Calhoun Cycle - Purveyors of recumbent-specific clothing and some custom parts, including the Evo handlebars for RANS bikes.
Gaerlan Custom Cycles - Source for custom stuff an homebuilding supplies
Hostel Shoppe - Far and away the biggest on-line recumbent catalog house. Very professional. They've even gotten into building their own bikes. Great catalog, free for the asking.
Power-On Cycling - Another good source for various parts and homebuilding supplies. Dealers in Swanson hardshell seats, RANS replacement bits and so forth.
Zach Kaplan Recumbents
- Based in California, Zach is one of the gurus of the recumbent world, and offers some unique products such as extra-long-cage derailleurs, hubs with lube-injection ports, and so on. If you need weird stuff and good advice, email him.

Clubs and organizations

IHPVA
- The leading non-profit HPV organization. They have an active email list that is an excellent source of information. Info can be found at http://www.ihpva.org/mailman/listinfo
WHIRL
- Washington DC-based recumbent group.
WISIL
- When this site grows up, it wants to be just like the WISIL site. Lots of good stuff here.
Chicagoland
- A large and active club, with a lot of tinkering going on. Good site.
MnHPVA
- Some good info here, including articles of interest to homebuilders, info on tires and a great page about bents for kids.
Orange County Bicycle Club
- Home club of our very own Joe "recumbo" Keenan. Sponsors of the Country Roads Bicycle Tour
Rochester Area Recumbent Enthusiasts - Serving the other corner of NY state
Tri-County Recumbent Riders - Lansing, Michigan. Some good Coroplast and wheel disc info here.
5 Boro Bike Club - The folks who organize Bike NY and the Montauk Century
NY Cycle Club - Much more performance oriented than the 5BBC, but evidenly they frown on recumbents
Sound Cyclists Bicycle Club - CT based rider's group, organizers of the Bloomin' Metric
Central Jersey Bicycle Club - Sponsors of the NJ Farmlands Flat tour in early May.
Narragansett Bay Wheelmen - Sponsors of the Flattest Century in the East in early September.
Granite State Wheelmen - NH-based sponsors of the Seacoast Century, which covers no fewer than three states!

HPV Racing

Kissena
Velodrome - Located in Queens, NY. No HPV events are held there. Yet.... As of summer 2003, the facility is being completely overhauled by the NYC Parks Dept. The link takes you to the current status of the project
APVHQ - Quebec, Canada... the closest HPRa-sanctioned HPV racing to New York. Site not responding when last checked.
HPRa - Sanctioning body for HPV events. Go here for rules.

Manufacturers of recumbent bikes and trikes

Bacchetta - Great big-wheel bikes that have great genes.
Bike Friday - Makers of very cool (and rather costly) folding bikes, including a folding recumbent
Catrike - Road and very cool Speed trikes.
Challenge - Dutch builder of very sexy lowracers
Easy Racers - Tour Easy and Gold Rush Replica
Greenspeed - World-class touring and racing trikes
Haluzak - SWB USS bikes of good quality.
HP Velotechnik - German builder of some interesting laid-back bikes
ICE - high performance trikes
Lightning Cycle Dynamics - P38, F40, Stealth, Thunderbolt
Longbikes - Eliminator, Slipstream, some interesting tandems, too
Linear - Interesting aluminum box-beam construction, good value, now made by Peter Stull, the Bicycleman
M5 - Wild Dutch recumbents
Organic Engines - Triclops and Troika trikes, Vapor SWB
RANS - A leading, mainstream manufacturer
Reynolds Weld Lab - T-Bone titanium USS SWB rocketships
Sun Bicycles - Designed by Easy Racers, imported by J&B, entry-level bikes. The EZ-1 makes a good first recumbent.
Thys Rowing Bikes - Truly cool, and a darned good deal. Check it out.
Vision - One of the older builders, with an interesting SWB/LWB/ASS/USS modular design
Windcheetah - High-performance trikes
Wizwheelz - Economical TerraTrike
