Route description: Delaware Water Gap
The ride starts by going out of the Center's lot and making a left onto the service road that leads to Old Mine Road. The first 1/4 mile of the road can only handle one car at a time; it is narrow, one way and alternates with the use of a traffic light.
The part of the road that is maintained by the Worthington State Park (first six miles of the ride) looks like it was paved recently and is smooth. The part of the road that is maintained by the National Park Service is paved and clean, but older and a bumpy ride The speed limit is posted as 15 MPH.
The ride begins with a relatively longish climb from river level to an elevation of a few hundred feet, then it descends again to river level. After some flat areas and a few rollers the road climbs to Millbrook..
The 12 miles has substantial climbs at both ends and consequently speedy downhills. As an alternative, 3 miles up Old Mine Road on the left is the Worhington State Park Center. The entrance has two stone pillars and a fire rating sign. There is plenty of parking but it is not known if the facilities will be open. You can park there and avoid the first hill and ride the smoother State section and turn around before you have to ascend to Millbrook. The road runs through national and state parks so there are no places to eat or get repairs. Besides the vistor's center there are port o sans at picnic areas that dot the road. |
