Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan (WMU)
Description:

The MHPVA 2012 meeting is will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012, 12:30pm to 4:00pm, at the Western Michigan University College of Engineering Room D-115 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Directions To The Meeting Site: 4601 Campus Drive, Kalamazoo, MI 49008

Driving directions from I-94

  • At exit #74, turn north on U.S. 131, go 2.8 miles, then follow the directions listed below for U.S. 131.

Driving directions from U.S. 131

  • At exit #36A, turn east onto Stadium Dr.
  • Turn right at first light, which is Drake Rd.
  • Continue on Drake Rd. through the next light (at Parkview Ave.) into the WMU Parkview Campus. You will now be on campus Drive.

For a map to the meeting site, and a meeting flyer, click here.

The College of Engineering and Applies Sciences (CEAS) shares this campus with a Business Technology and Research park. The building we want is the largest building on the campus and it has a large parking structure behind it. No parking permits are required to park in the structure on Saturdays.

Lecture Hall D-115 is on the first floor in the Engineering Center. Anyone with vehicles or other heavy items to show would do well to unload at the main entrance at the front of the building. There is also a nice lobby the MHPVA can use. Unfortunately, there isn't much parking in the front of the building and those unloading HPV’s will probably have to move their car to the big lot on the east side of the building or to the parking structure behind. All doors to the building should be open, however. Questions? Contact Paul Pancella at Paul.Pancella@WMich.eduor Mike Mowett at mowett@aol.comor 586-863-3902.

7/29/2012 to 7/29/2012     Black Bear 100 mile Century Update
Location: Grayling, Michigan to Oscoda, Michigan
Description:

A premier 100-mile race/tour held in northern Michigan.  Recumbents have shown up in large numbers (up to 16 entires one year) at this event, along with over 250 uprights/tandems.  Racers get professional chip timing.  The course is one-way with the option of a shuttle bus return to the start.  It's one of the fastest and most fun centuries you can ride.  The course usually has a slight tailwind, and is overall downhill following the AuSable river valley.  There are three large hills with about a 100 feet of climbing at about 30 miles, 70 miles (HeartBreak Hill), & 80 miles (Block and Tackle hill), so gear accordingly.  Downhill speeds can easily exceed 40 mph.  Racers start in groups of ten riders, every minute starting at 8 am Sunday morning.  Note: in the past there was a mass-start Leman's style send-off, but the organizers changed that in recent years.  Best times (course record) are Dave Johnson at 3 hours 38 minutes in a streamliner.  Dave's won the event overall 4 times.  A sub-four hour century is possible on this course. Drafting is allowed.  http://blackbearbicycletour.com/

Roads have light traffic.  There are usually no stops along the course, as all the intersections are manned with people with flags.  It is a well staffed event with sag support in case of "emergencies".  There are rest stops and water stations.  Expect some traffic on the roads from the canoe (see below) and bicycle support vehicles.

Note: The event is held in conjunction with North America's largest canoe race, the AuSable River marathon - a 122 mile, 15-hour grueling race.  One goal of the event is to see who can make it to Oscoda first, the bicyclists leaving 8 am Sunday morning or the Canoeists who leave 11 hours earlier on Saturday night.  There is a festival-like atmosphere in both towns.  The bicyclists usually gather for dinner at 6 pm Big Boys in Grayling on Saturday night, then walk over to pick up their race registration packet and chip timing at the bicycle store HQ, then watch the start of the canoe race which begins with racers carrying their canoes up to three city blocks through downtown before tossing them in the water to start the race.  Crowds can be about 5,000 people for the canoe race.

8/19/2012     Ohio 40k Recumbent Challenge Update
Location: Celina, Ohio
Description:

Recumbent racing vetran Thom Ollinger has joined forces with the Colavita/Zipp Time Trial Series in Western Ohio to create a new racing opportunity. The opportunity is two fold. First is a special catagory for nonfaired recumbents to see who is the fastest in the land. This category will have it's own awards. Second is the chance for any recumbent, faired, trike, male or female, to compete in the regular time trial for the C/Z medalions. But, this is no ordinary "meet out in the country and get timed my a stopwatch" event. The race organizer(ex pro cyclist), Roger Bowersock was named as one of the top eight race promoters in the U.S. Besides having a beautiful course that circles a lake, there is a start booth, 1k, and finish arches, and tons of give aways. It is as close to doing a TdF time trial as you may ever gets.

Various classes:  Stock bikes, streamlined bikes, etc.  All types welcome

From above site....The Human Power Challenge is happily more than just a racing bonanza. It has culminated into being one of the most festive social gathering points for the recumbent and HPV clan. We do like to spend a lot of time chatting it up while gazing at the variety of vehicles present while telling of tales of outrageous hyperbole.

That being said, folks bring (and are encouraged to do so!), all types and varieties of HPV steeds, be they professionally manufactured or as a "uniquely inspired" creation. Some of the concoctions dreamed up by those pioneers are simply awe inspiring. We can only say WOW and bring it on!

Online registration ends May 18th, Please register on race day at the track after the 18th of May

7/27/2014     Black Bear 100 mile Century Race / Tour Update
Location: Grayling, Michigan to Oscoda, Michigan
Description:

Registration and more info http://www.blackbearbicycletour.com/

Electronically timed 100 mile "race" / tour.  A very fast and fun Century.  Major hills at about 17 miles, 30 miles, 70 miles and 80 miles into the course, with some rollers in-between.  Overall the course is downhill, one-way with usually a tailwind, as it goes from West to east following the Au Sable River Valley.  Route map (note this may change slightly from year to year)  http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/60983380/

There are about 250 riders on this event, starting in waves of ten riders each every one minute.  There are no stops along the course, as most of the intersections are staffed with volunteers.  Register early (before June 22) for a discount.  Plan on taking a shuttle bus, or hitching a ride back to the starting point, if you are riding solo.  There is a festive atmosphere between these two towns, as North America's largest canoe paddle race is also taking place this same weekend.  Canoeists from around the world paddle over 122 miles down the Au Sable river starting 9 pm Saturday night with the goal of beating the cyclists to Oscoda the following morning.  The cyclists start leaving at 8 am.

Typical winning times for packs of uprights have been around 4 hours, or sub-four hours some years.  Many recumbents have competed in the past in this event.  Four times the event was won by Dave Johnson in his streamlined recumbent bicycle, the Great White.  This past year Chris Evans won the event (Dave was 2nd in 3:43) in his streamlined Quest Velomobile with a new course record of 3 hours 36 minutes.

Location: Waterford Hills sports car racing track, Clarkston
Description:

The 31st annual event conducted by the Michigan Human Powered Vehicle Assocation takes place on the 1.4 mile Waterford Hills track, which has nine turns and one hill.  HPRA rules apply.   Riders of all types of bicycles/tricycles welcome.

LOCATION: Oakland County Sportsmen's Club, 4770 Waterford Road, Clarkston, MI 48346.

ENTRY FEES:  Register in advance and save money by going to http://register.bostonandpop.com. One day only, $30; both days, $40 (includes $10 MHPVA membership). "Day of race" registration is an additional $10. Additional vehicles raced by the same rider cost $10, whether for one or both days.

For teams, defined as any group in which multiple riders may compete in the same vehicle over the course of the rally, every unique combination of rider and vehicle must register separately in order to participate in any event.  Every such combination will be charged $15 for the weekend and have its own unique number, consisting of the vehicle number (appropriate to the competition class) and a letter suffix.  Registrations must be complete and paid for by Saturday  morning for all participating combinations, to prevent a rider deciding just before the start of a race to participate.  It will be the team’s responsibility to prominently display the correct number on the vehicle for every event.

For example, the same vehicle will display the number 305-A when raced by Joe Smith, then 305-B when raced by Celia Jones, even if it is in the same event (such as the sprints).   Then observers don’t have to record names at the starting grid.  All such numbers must be traceable to a registration sheet that has the proper rider name on it.  At the discretion of the treasurer or race director, additional team registrations may be accepted on Sunday morning for that day's events.

Test ride pass, $10, which includes MHPVA membership. Spectators free. Even if you don't want to compete, come and see some unusual and some very fast bicycles and tricycles. Prize money will be awarded to top finishers in each class.

7/26/2015     Black Bear 100 mile Century Update
Location: Grayling, Michigan to Oscoda Michigan
Description:

A premier 100-mile race held in northern Michigan.   Racers get professional chip timing.  The course is one-way with the option of a shuttle bus return to the start.  It’s one of the fastest and most fun centuries you can ride. A sub-four hour century is possible on this course. Drafting is allowed.  http://blackbearbicycletour.com/

Roads have heavy traffic.  There are usually no stops along the course, as all the intersections are manned with people with flags.  It is a well staffed event with sag support in case of “emergencies” There are rest stops and water stations.  Expect some traffic on the roads from the canoe (see below) and bicycle support vehicles.

9/12/2016 to 9/19/2016     World Human Powered Speed Challenge (WHPSC) Update
Location: Battle Mountain, Nevada
Description:

Annual competition to determine the world's fastest human powered machines!

see http://www.recumbents.com/wisil/whpsc2016/speedchallenge.htm for more details.

During the week of September 12th through September 17th 2016, cyclists from around the world will gather on State Route 305 outside of Battle Mountain, Nevada in a quest to break the human-powered land speed record. The record currently stands at 86.65 mph (139.21 kph).

This will be the 17th consecutive year of competition at this site, home of one of the straightest, flattest and smoothest roads in the world. The 4,619ft (1,408m) altitude course provides an acceleration zone of 5 miles leading to a 200 meter speed trap. The highway was repaved in 2009 and special consideration for this particular section of road to ensure utmost smoothness for the WHPSC was given by the Nevada Department of Transportation.

IHPVA Speed Records set at the 2015 WHPSC:
1) Todd Reichert of the Canadian AeroVelo team has reset the top speed record to an amazing 86.65MPH!
2) Ellen Van Vugt of the Dutch Elan team has set the women's multi-track record at 54.45 MPH
3) Florian Kowalik of the USA GeeBee team has set the Junior Mens 15 to 17 (16) multi-track record at 57.92 MPH
4) Liz McTernan of the British University of Plymouth team has set the Womens arm powered record at 24.72 MPH
5) Cecilia Kowalik of the American GeeBee team has set the Womens Junior 12 to 14 (13) top speed record at 30.88 MPH
6) Genevieve Kowalik of the American GeeBee team has set the Womens Junior 11 and under (10) top speed record at 37.29 MPH

Though not official IHPVA records, several new country specific records were set.
1) Damjan Zabovnik finally broke though the 80 MPH barrier and set a new Slovenian record at 80.01 MPH in the Eivie 4.2 backward facing speedbike. This is also a speed record for a builder/racer.
2)
Ken Buckley of the University of Liverpool team set an English record of 75.03 MPH in a battle scarred Arion1 speedbike.
3) Andrea Gallo of team Policumbent set an Italian record of 72.19 MPH in the PulsaR speedbike.

All records set are sanctioned by the IHPVA.

Event Coordinators / Race Directors: Al and Alice Krause:  Email or (707) 443-8261 (10:00AM to 10:00PM PST)

The WHPSC is open to all. Entries are limited due to road-closure time constraints.
