Michigan Human Powered Vehicle Rally
June 21 - 22, 2003 - Waterford Hills Race Course, Waterford, Michigan

Scorekeeper's Notes by Bill Frey

Sunny skies greeted 42 competitors in 7 classes at the 2003 Michigan HPV Rally.

For the hour time trial, 18 of the vehicles (streamliner, superstreet, superstock, & multi-rider classes) competed together in the first race, and the other 24 (stock, junior, & women's classes) competed in a second race. Participants circled the entire 1.40 mile track, including one hill about 30 feet high, and completed the lap they were on when the hour ended. Average speeds were computed from lap counts and times. This year we tried out the hpra's new timing system with transponders. This was the first use of the timing system and was generally successful. The results shown are based on the manual count, which was done as a backup, and was generally consistent with the electronic count.

The hill-climb and coast-down were conducted together. Riders charged up the hill from a standing start and their climb times were recorded. They stopped pedaling at the top of the hill and descended the other side, coasting as far as possible. Riders marked their stop positions on the track with chalk and the order of finish was recorded. Being light and strong are the dominant factors in the hill-climb. In the coast down, weight is an advantage and low aerodynamic and rolling resistance are the dominant factors.

The one-kilometer (1000 meters) time trial, a new event for the Michigan HPV Rally, was conducted from a standing start. The flattest part of the track was used, and the start and finish lines were arranged so that the timers could easily see both start and finish lines. Two timers took turns timing the vehicles so that we could have two competitors on the track at almost all times.

The sprint speeds were measured with two radar guns this year, the MHPVA's and one brought by Richard Myers. There was some variation in the readings, so the timers averaged the readings when necessary.

The road-race course was relatively flat, but with several turns. Course length was not measured and riders were not timed, but laps and finish order were recorded. The race ended on the lap when the leader finished. We divided the competitors into two groups ("faster" and "slower") based on sprint speeds. The faster group had a 15-lap race and the slower group, a 10-lap race. Classes were not taken into account, so these races are not included in the composite score and the results are listed separately.

In each event that was included in the composite score, first place in each class scored 1 point, second, 2 points, etc. Those not participating in a given event received last place points plus 1 point. We computed composite scores by adding the scores for the hour time-trial, hill-climb, coast-down, kilometer & sprints. These determined the composite finishing order, with lowest totals being first place.

Many people helped set up and run the events and did the lap counting, timing, and tabulation of results. Thanks especially to Jon and Carol Stinson, Wally Kiehler, Terry Gerweck, Paul Pancella, Warren Beauchamp, John Abbey, Mike Eliasohn, Matt Kiehler, & Mike Channon. If you find scoring errors, please notify Bill Frey
