Halloween Hydrobowl 2008
Halloween Hydrobowl 2008 Human Powered Boat Event
Held November 8th, 2008 at the Long Beach Marine Stadium, Long Beach, CA.
Event organizer Bill Gaines. Pictures by Larry Lem.
3 HPBs participated in this year's event.

Dwight Filley's monohull HPB with front steering rudder.

Bill Gaines has one of Sid Shutt's old hydrofoils, but had no test time in it and never got on the foils. He used the boat for course setup, and made one 100m pass.

Huge chainring!
This boat uses a 90 degree gear to drive the driveshaft
The drive shaft goes down through the fin and through a u-joint to the prop.
Those looks like SRM cranks.
I'm not sure what all this complication is for. Maybe for foils which are not attached? That may by why the prop is so far under the boat as well.

Steve Ball's boat is similar to Dwight's, but narrower.

Huge chainring drives a 90 degree gear unit.

Looks like Steve is Steve is using a marine GPS as a speedo.
Aluminum tube and clamp allows chain tension adjustment.  Driveshaft goes down through hull.
Simple steering by pulling the cables.
Bent driveshaft dives the prop.
Mini-trailer rigs allow easy launching into deep water.
These boats look very similar to Bill Murphy's Transducer HPB.
Judging by the drivetrain, I'd say this is another of Steve Ball's boats, built on a sea kayak hull.
 Tom Traylor's catamaran
This HPB employs a compact drive unit, which can be pulled out through a hole in the hull.
Tom's boat from the front. Very nice and narrow.
This is Paul Gracey’s twisted chain drive unit. He didn’t bring a boat, just a drive.
Tom Traylor under power.
Dwight Filley prepares to race
Steve Ball gets underway
Dwight with his HPB. He seems to have switched to a different front rudder, with a foil?
