Friday's
Results
I should have put this picture in yesterday's article,
but forgot because I am lazy and incompetent. However...

This is why the
use of acrylic for windshields is Strongly Deprecated. Diligent
analysis of the high-res version of this photo will show the presence
of Blood on the fairing, though it's Paul Krieg's rather than that of
rider Hans Wessels. Sharp. Just say "no", kids. Photo

Anyway, in the morning there were quarter-mile drag
races, run out on Muleshoe Road. Ever at your service, Constant
Reader, I did not attend, as I was busy turning out the report on
yesterday's racing. However, Mike Mowett did, and took his camera.

More bike-fettling in the afternoon, most notably by
Steve Delaire, who has bridged the "tunnel" down the centre of the Big
Gun's top. This also required the use of a taller head
bubble. Natch I did not find out about this until afterwards,
chiz, so any pictures will have to wait until tomorrow. A chain
retention disc was confected for the Varna Mephisto, carefully
installed and then removed, amid a certain number of Harsh Words, to
allow the bolts to be repositioned with their heads to the
inside. Otherwise the smallest amount of right lock would have
seen the nuts savaging the front tyre. And we all know what
transpires when that happens,
don't we, boys and girls? Say "Yes, Uncle David, we do!" (That's enough of that kind of nonsense -
Ed.)
And then to 305 once more. Wind, and plenty of it,
is the order of the day, to the extent that only two riders elect to
run in the first session. Hans Wessels takes the WhiteHawk
chassis for a spin in the country, followed by Mark Mueller's
correx-faired Greenspeed. He claims a correx world record with
his 44.10 mph clocking, so we BRITONS will have to
persuade Nigel Sleigh to get the Plastic Maggot out for a proper run
against the clock...
There then followed a lengthy delay before the second
group set off, as Mr. Chief Organisator Woolrich was determined to give
the wind as much time as possible to die. It did, in that all the
riders in the second group had IHPVA-legal wind, but all five remakred
that the wind seemed much harder to cope with than yesterday's illegal
blow. Strange. Sam Whittingham said that he sailed all the
way down, while Steve Nash, chasing Ellen van Vugt, said the Varnowski
was drifting from the centreline all the way to the right shoulder of
the road before Ellen corrected and steered away from the edge.
Freddy Markham reported that a gust had obliged him to hit the brakes a
mile and a half from the traps, but he still managed to set a new
personal best and, even more pleasing to him, beat Sam for the first
time since 1992! Steve Delaire said he'd had a nice smooth run,
though still being blown around a bit, but he was getting a lot of air
coming in around the wheels where he had lacked the time to sort the
sealing out properly. He was one hundredth of a second quicker
than Ron Layman in the Velox Solium, who set another collegiate record
with a storming 59.89 mph pass in near-darkness( this being the reason
why photos of the second group are conspicuously lacking). But I
think all agree that tonight belongs to rider Ellen van Vugt and
builder Steve Nash, with what is indubitably a new world record at
65.89 mph!

I
include this
photo of the IHPVA timing set-up in order to demonstrate that, in
spite of any evidence to the contrary, we are not making this up.
