Battle Mountain 2010 Drag Races
Pictures by Robert Barnett, Verbiage by Mike Mowett

Robert Barnett's classic truck aka 1/8 mile Drag Race headquarters – I wonder what he's got under that hood? He brought all the equipment for the drag races including a Christmas tree and Alge timing system.

Paul Gracey the only with a fairing. He prepares to get his Lightning F40 going, assisted by Scott Wilson. Claudia from the Human Power documentary crew prepares to snap a picture in the background.
Julius Makuch hits the throttle and presses on the pedals of George Georgiev's electric assist trike. He won the electric assist category in 25.178 seconds It appears he is wearing the same Troxel Radius helmet that his wife Barbara or Sam wears.

Tamaki Layman starts out on a Trek 5200 carbon fiber upright. Ron was the holder. They were part of the large Cal Poly alumni group.
Mike Mowett, on his first run using his Challenge lowracer. Mike despite being in numerous drag racers before, jumped the lights on this run, hence a negative1.3 sec reaction time. Despite the early start, it was only his 3rd fastest run of the day.

Robert Barnett on a Trek 7.5 FX Hybrid upright bike (Will Nesling, did he do a bike then carry?)
Victor Ragusila of the University of Toronto HPV team rides a Vision recumbent. He had two runs, his fastest was 22.400 seconds.

Julius Makuch, again on the electric assist Varna trike which is equipped with baskets. I saw Barbara returning to the Super 8 with groceries in these baskets.
Brian Hill of Cal Poly alumni gives his information slip to George Leone at the Timing table.

Ivan Sack on his upright "Pugo" makes a run in 20.219 seconds, one of the faster runs of the day.
John Jackson makes a run for it.

Scott Wilson trying out the Trek 7.5 FX hybrid. I believe that's Kim Nelson at far left.
Racers pop the hood (fairing) on Robert Barnett's special built dragster-bike. Unfortunately, something broke from his starting torque off the line and he didn't get a run in.

David Long of Missouri's' S&T cross-country team prepares to run. He had the fastest time on foot at 26.152 seconds, a quick 200-meter time with no running cleats or starting blocks. Compare this to Usain Bolt's 19.19 seconds world record.
Robert Barnett makes another run on the Trek Hybrid FX.

Whittney Metcalf of Missouri S&T on her Lemond upright takes off to a fast time of 20.561 seconds.

Andrew Soark of Missouri S&T starts off his run like a pro sprinter with head down and leaning forward. His time was 29.557 seconds. Anything under 30 seconds is fast in this event.
Mike Mowett, shirtless starts off on one of his final two runs. A pair of John Morciglio carbon fiber wheel covers is on Mike's Challenge Fujin lowracer. Earlier this summer he found that riding shirtless improved his avg speed almost 1 mph.

Racers line up to gaze down the street. The course was on S Humboldt street, starting at 5th street. There was a slight downhill and tailwind. This street is one street over from Board street which turns into Hwy 305 outside of town. The racers went in front of the courthouse.

Will Nesling on the upright bike again.
Scott Wilson tries on Mike Mowett's Challenge Fujin lowracer, his 2nd different ride of the day. I believe someone said he took 5 seconds off his best time on the upright, but the results say otherwise. Scott weaved a lot leaving the line. It was his first time racing a lowracer.

Brian Hill, foreground races John Polock in the background. Both are from Cal Poly. Brian had the next fastest upright times on his Felt Curbside after John and Scott Wilson.
Mike Mowett just out of the picture leaves the line on his 3rd and fastest 1/8 mile drag of 17.926 seconds for a 25.1 mph avg from a standing start. Peak speed just after the traps was 36 mph. He had the fastest time of the day of 17.926 seconds, just edging out John Polock's time of 17.947 seconds on his upright.

George Leone foreground vs. Larry Lem background in a battle of ASME alumni builders. Larry won in a time of 27.368 seconds, which is very quick the 2nd fastest running time of the day, faster than "kids" half his age. The boots and jeans could have probably slowed George.
John Pocock, Cal Poly alumni had the top 2 fastest upright times on his fixed gear bike and 2nd fastest overall at 17.947 He reached the 1/16 mile (about 100 meters) the fastest in 10.685 seconds, even though his reaction time was 1.266 seconds. In other words his elapsed time of 9.419 seconds would have beat Usain Bolt to 100 meters and 200 meters Uprights can definitely accelerate quickly.

Scott Wilson, a multidisciplinary competitor, did the drag races on two uprights, a lowracer and also on foot for four events total. Scott also volunteered throughout the week at Start, or as a Chase driver or in Catch.
